- Week 8 Results-

3 Hits

4 Misses

Season to date: 29-19-1

Happy Memorial Day!

Not much production from the players that were recommended for week 8. I have to give out hits and misses, so here is the criteria I will use to determine if the player had a good week:

Hitters:

  • Get around nine hits
  • Score more than a few runs
  • Reach second base on one swing a couple of times
  • Slug more than 1 homer
  • Plate and handful or more runs
  • Steal a base or two
  • Hit for a decent average

Pitchers:

  • Get a win (or two)
  • Strike out around a batter an inning
  • Throw for a decent ERA and Whip.

Here are the results from week 8, followed by a recipe for Smoked Chicken Salad

Hits

Wandy Rodriguez moved to a 6-2 Sunday with a win over Milwaukee. He allowed seven hits over five innings but managed to hold Milwaukee to three runs. He didn’t walk a batter and struck out four. The start broke a streak of four games (all four of his May starts) in which he went at least six innings. His ERA is 3.58.

In his other start of the week, Wandy fell behind early Tuesday against the Cubs, but managed to hold on long enough for a quality start and the win. Rodriguez allowed three runs in the second inning, on four hits, but otherwise held the Cubs silent all game long. He ultimately allowed just the three runs on six hits in six innings of work, while striking out five batters and walking none. He needed just 87 pitches to finish his six innings of work. He exited the game down 3-0, but the Pirates rallied back in the bottom half of the sixth to put him in line for the win. Pittsburgh would hold on for a 5-4 victory. Here are his stats for week 8

Ryan Howard missed Sunday’s series finale against the Washington Nationals due to an ailing left knee. He had a decent start to the week, but not enough.

Miguel Montero‘s struggles continued in week 8, as he got only 5 hits, though 2 of those were doubles. not enough.

Misses

Alex Rios went 0-for-4 against the Miami Marlins Saturday, May 25, ending his hitting streak at a career-high 18 games. He started a new one on Sunday and didn’t do too much for your team in week 8.

Martin Prado had a nice weekend with 8 hits which made his week. Unfortunately none of those hits left the park and he didn’t drive in a ton. His average was enough to help you though.

Norichika Aoki ended week 7 on a high note and I though he would continue his hot hitting, but nope. His lowly 4 hits did nothing to help.

Marco Scutaro went 0-for-3 with two walks Wednesday against the Nationals, snapping his 19-game hitting streak. He is drawing the walk though, and has reached base safely in 16 of the last 17 games. But walks aren’t going to win you fantasy championships.

SMOKED CHICKEN SALAD
INGREDIENTS

1 whole chicken, halved
1/4 cup your favorite barbecue rub
1/2 cup mayonnaise
3/4 cup finely chopped celery (about 2 medium stalks)
1/3 cup finely sliced scallions (about 1 medium)
1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice from 1 lemon
1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
1 teaspoon smoked paprika
1 teaspoon hot sauce
1/2 teaspoon celery seeds
Kosher salt, to taste
Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Fist-sized chunk of light smoking wood, such as apple or cherry

PREPARATION

Rub chicken all over with barbecue rub. Fire up smoker or grill to 225°F, adding chunks of smoking wood when at temperature. When wood is ignited and producing smoke, place chicken in smoker or grill, skin side up. Smoke until an instant read thermometer reads 160°F when inserted into thickest part of thigh, 1 1/2 – 2 hours. Remove from smoker and let cool completely, about 1 hour.

While chicken is cooling, mix together mayonnaise, celery, scallions, lemon juice, vinegar, celery seeds, and paprika in a small bowl to make the dressing.

Pull meat from bones and roughly chop. Place meat in a large bowl and pour in dressing. Stir to combine. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve immediately or store in an airtight container in refrigerator for up to 3 days.
