As we head into the month of November, We say goodbye to baseball and hello to basketball. The National Basketball Association and the NCAA begin play to determine a champion. We got you covered with everything hoops from NBA Season Previews NBA on TV and the Full November Schedule, to  NCAA College Basketball Season Previews by Conference and links to Preseason Ranks, to the complete NCAA CB Schedule for November. And of course, we have the FANFOOD TOP 10 NBA teams and FANFOOD TOP 10 NCAA College Basketball squads.

But let’s not forget about Football. The NFL enters it’s second half and we are starting to think about playoffs, yes PLAYOFFS. Speaking of playoffs, you should know by now that the NCAA has adopted a College Football Playoff (CFP) System going forward and in this article you will find links to the most current information from the College Football Selection Committee, the group that will pick the 4 Schools that will compete for the Trophy. Click here for the FULL NFL Schedule in November and the remaining games in the NCAA.

Keeping with the Playoff Theme, NASCAR is in the midst of it’s own. 8 Drivers remain in the Eliminator Round, with the Top 4 Drivers competing for the Championship on November 16th in Miami.

And in Professional Tennis, the ATP has a Tournament of it’s own to crown a Champion. The Barclays ATP World Tour FINALS are being held in London, November 9th – 16th. Eight players are divided into two groups of four and play three round-robin matches each against the other players in their group. The two players with the best records in each group progress to the semifinals, with the winners meeting in the final to determine the champion.

Finally, later in the month the 102nd Grey Cup will be played to decide the champion for the 2013 CFL season. It will be played on November 30, 2014 at BC Place in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Of course, when we think of November, we think of Thanksgiving, and whether this is your first time hosting a Dinner, or you are a Seasoned Pro, we got a ton of information for you to use from helpful tips and tricks, recipes for the bird and our favorite sides, to how to carve the beast, and all the games you can watch while you are doing it.

November is a great time for sports, and here is your guide.

National Football League

As we head into November and week 9 of the season, it’s going to come down to a tale of two half’s. There are a couple of surprises in the FANFOOD TOP 10. There is no doubt that the Cowboys looked dominant to start the season, but injuries and poor defensive play take them down a notch and possibly out of the playoffs.  We have moved them down to No. 8 on our list.  The STEELERS however, are back in our TOP 10 because they are playing great on the offensive side of the ball.  It should be an interesting month, stay tuned…

NCAA College Football

As the calendar flips to November, The College Football Playoff Selection Committee has released it’s first ranking. The selection committee members will meet weekly, in person, on Mondays and Tuesdays to produce rankings. The committee will issue its first rankings Tuesday, October 28, after the completion of the ninth week of the regular season.  The committee’s rankings will be announced on ESPN each Tuesday evening beginning October 28 and continuing for the next five weeks.

The new CFP system will determine a national champion for the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision. Under the playoff, four teams play in two semifinal games, with the winners advancing to the new College Football Championship Game. Six bowls — the Rose Bowl, Sugar Bowl, Orange Bowl, Cotton Bowl, Fiesta Bowl, and Peach Bowl — rotate as hosts for the semifinal games. The rotation is set on a three-year cycle with the following pairings: Rose/Sugar, Orange/Cotton, and Fiesta/Peach. The two semifinals plus the other four top-tier bowls are marketed as the “New Year’s Six”, with three bowls played per day, typically on consecutive days that include New Year’s Day.

The championship game is played on the first Monday that is six or more days after the semifinals.  AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas will host the first title game on January 12, 2015.

It’s hard to argue with the Selection Committee’s first rankings, but we shuffled it up a bit. Here are the NCAA Football FANFOOD TOP 10 as we head into the 11th month of the year.

 National Hockey League

The Top 2 Teams in the NHL can be interchangeable, they are both that good, after that, it is anyone’s guess. That’s what they play the games and why we watch. Despite Slava Voynov’s legal problems, the Kings have stuck to business on the ice and are playing great. Jonathan Quick is off to a Vezina winner-like start and Tanner Pearson  is looking good as an early rookie-of-the-year candidate. The loss of top center Anze Kopitar last Sunday is worrisome, though they are the #1 team in the FANFOOD TOP 10.

As we head into November, the second team on our list, The Ducks, lost last Sunday for the first time since opening night to one of the three mighty California-based teams. Still, it has been a banner start for the Ducks, who are getting it done on both sides of the puck. They have a nice test coming up with a tough four-game swing through the Central Division. Rounding out the top 3, The Habs continue to set the pace in the East with a four-game winning streak.

NBCSN will offer most games on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights throughout the season. Beginning in January, a Sunday game will be added most weeks.

NBC Sports Group’s NHL lead broadcast team is comprised of two-time Emmy award-winning play-by-play voice Mike “Doc” Emrick, as well as analyst Eddie Olczyk and Emmy-award winning “Inside the Glass” analyst Pierre McGuire.

NHL ON NBC

NHL on NBC coverage begins on Friday, November 28 at 1 p.m. ET, with the NHL Thanksgiving Showdown featuring the New York Rangers at Philadelphia Flyers, marking the first of 14 games that will air on NBC during the regular season. Beginning on January 18, and continuing through the end of the regular season, NBC will present the NHL Game of the Week, generally occurring on Sunday afternoons. NBC will also present the Flyers and Rangers in primetime at 8 p.m. ET on Saturday, Feb. 28.

Last year, NBC posted its most-watched NHL regular season since its most-recent agreement with the league in the 2005-06 season, including last year’s NHL Stadium Series game between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Chicago Blackhawks, which averaged 2.8 million viewers and was the most-watched NHL regular-season game, excluding Winter Classics and regional coverage, since the advent of People Meters (1987).

National Basketball Association

The NBA is back. This season feels a bit more predictable than the last. Fewer teams are straddling two possible strategic paths, almost everyone appears to have chosen at least a short-term team-building plan, and there doesn’t appear to be a Portland or Phoenix waiting to shock us all by blowing past its expected win total. There’s something about the upcoming 2014-15 NBA season that feels awfully familiar. It could be because…

  • LeBron James is a Cleveland Cavalier again, determined to win over the hearts and minds of Clevelanders
  • Kobe Bryant and Derrick Rose return to full strength after devastating, psyche-crushing, season-ending injuries…again.
  • Gregg Popovich and the San Antonio Spurs defend an NBA title, again.
  • Phil Jackson is talking Zen again, in the city in which he first learned how to win.
  • Charlotte has cast aside its cursed Bobcats moniker and returned to its beloved maiden name.

Doc Rivers and the Los Angeles Clippers are finally on sturdy foundation, free from the horrors of previous ownership, well-positioned for a run at the Larry O’Brien Trophy. Anthony Davis might already be the third-best player in the world at just 21 years old, bringing more hope to New Orleans than any single player since Pistol Pete (sorry Chris Paul, even you couldn’t claim this kind of upside while still putting up all-world numbers). Jabari Parker, Andrew Wiggins and Dante Exum headline one of the most promising rookie classes of a generation and might even make basketball watchable in Minneapolis, Milwaukee and Salt Lake City, respectively. And—not to be understated—the NBA has a new gargantuan media-rights deal, which will likely change the entire structure of the league’s finances and labor relations in the coming years.

So, same as it ever was, same as it never was. Got it.

How will things change in 2014-15? Bleacher Report’s NBA experts have the answers to guide you through the 82-game expedition, as well as democratically agreed-upon picks and predictions for the record (and your scrutiny, please).

 ATP World Tour FINALS

BARCLAYS ATP WORLD TOUR FINALS
THE O2, LONDON | NOV 9-16

The ATP World Tour Finals is the last professional men’s tennis tournament played. It will be on indoor hard courts and is held annually in November at the O2 Arena in London, United Kingdom. The ATP World Tour Finals are the season-ending championships of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) World Tour, featuring the top eight singles players and doubles teams of the ATP Rankings. The tournament was first held in 1970. The current champions (2013) are Novak Djokovic in singles and David Marrero and Fernando Verdasco in doubles.

Unlike all other singles events on the men’s tour, the ATP World Tour Finals is not a straightforward knock-out tournament. Eight players are divided into two groups of four and play three round-robin matches each against the other players in their group. The two players with the best records in each group progress to the semifinals, with the winners meeting in the final to determine the champion. Though it is theoretically possible to advance to the semi-finals of the tournament with two round-robin losses, no player in the history of the singles tournament has won the title after losing more than one round-robin match.

The road to the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals is set for a thrilling climax with six contenders jockeying to join Novak Djokovic,Roger FedererStan Wawrinkaand Marin Cilic at The O2 from 9-16 November.

One player who is sacrificing blood, sweat and tears to reach the season finale is Andy Murray, who is guaranteed to qualify for London if he reaches the quarter-finals in Paris.

The others guys behind me will need to play extremely well in Paris to knock me out, so I’ve done everything I could,” Murray said.

FANFOOD Guide to Everything THANKSGIVING

The very first Thanksgiving was observed in Plymouth, MA in 1621, when weary settlers were joined by Wampanoag Indians in celebration of a traditional Old World English harvest festival. The Thanksgiving tradition continues today with turkey, savory stuffing and cranberry sauce, plus generous helpings of pumpkin pie and other desserts traditionally prepared from family recipes handed down through the years.

We all know Thanksgiving is a time for family togetherness, but it’s also the perfect time to discover or embrace your culinary passions. The celebration, after all, is really around the dinner table. Make this year’s meal something to remember. Whether you cook a classic menu or create new traditions entirely.

Whether you are are a Seasoned Veteran or this is your first time hosting the Festivities, we got you covered with everything you need to know to make it the best Thanksgiving Ever!

Here are our Favorite Go-To Recipes for Sides and Stuff:

Easy Turkey Gravy

Making gravy from your pan drippings is easy. You can make it with the drippings or use low sodium chicken broth while your turkey is resting. Don’t even think about using gravy from a jar.

INGREDIENTS:

1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
4 cups pan drippings

PREPARATION:

Drain the pan drippings for the roasted turkey through a fine strainer.
Let sit and then remove any fat from the top of the drippings.
Add in chicken broth or water to make 4 cups if necessary.
In a medium saucepan, melt margarine or butter.
Add in lots of black pepper.
Add in 1/2 cup flour plus 3 tablespoons; constantly whisk for about 3 minutes over low heat. Slowly add in the 4 cups turkey broth/drippings; whisk constantly over medium-low heat until bubbly and thickened (about 3 minutes).
Use right away or keep warm over lowest heat setting, whisk again before serving.

Mashed Potatoes

The greatest thing about this recipe for mashed potatoes is that you can make them ahead of time and cook them while the turkey is resting.

INGREDIENTS:

3 lbs potatoes (about 4 large)
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons butter or 2 tablespoons margarine
2 (3 ounce) packages cream cheese, softened
2/3 cup sour cream
1/4 cup milk
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon butter or 1 tablespoon margarine, melted
1/2 teaspoon paprika

PREPARATION:

Place potatoes in a saucepan; add water to cover and 1/2 teaspoon salt.
Bring to a boil; cover, reduce heat to medium and simmer for 25 minutes or until potatoes are tender. Drain.
Peel potatoes; place in a large mixing bowl, and mash with a potato masher.
Add 2 tablespoons butter, cream cheese, sour cream, milk and 3/4 teaspoon salt.
Mix until all ingredients are blended.
Spoon mixture into a lightly greased 12x8x2-inch baking dish. Brush top of mixture with melted butter; sprinkle with paprika. Bake immediately, or cover and refrigerate*.
Bake at 350F, uncovered for 30 minutes or until hot.
*= If refrigerated, let stand at room temperature for 30 minutes before baking.

Sweet Potato Casserole

This is my take on a classic sweet potato casserole. To me, you must top them with marshmallows, but they are optional.

INGREDIENTS:

Casserole
3 cups mashed sweet potatoes
2 eggs, lightly beaten
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup melted butter
1/4 cup cream
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Topping
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/3 cup flour
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
1/2 cup chopped pecans
3 tablespoons melted butter
1 cup mini marshmallows

PREPARATION:

Mix all of the casserole ingredients together until well blended.
Spread into a buttered casserole dish. Mix topping ingredients (except marshmallows) together and sprinkle over the casserole. Bake uncovered in a 350 degree oven for 35 minutes. Remove from oven. To top with marshmallows, place them on the casserole and bake for an addition 5-7 minutes or until marshmallows have melted.

Cranberry-Pineapple Sauce

This recipe makes close to 6 cups, plan ahead the sauce needs to chill for 24 hours before using.

INGREDIENTS:

1 (20 ounce) cans crushed pineapple in juice
2 (12 ounce) packages cranberries (fresh or frozen, preferably fresh)
1 1/4 cups sugar (can use more)
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
1/4 teaspoon cloves

PREPARATION:

Drain the pineapple thoroughly in a fine sieve set over a large measuring cup (push the pineapple against the sieve to drain out any extra juice).
Add enough water to the measuring cup (with the juice in it) to make 2 cups liquid.
Place the liquid in a saucepan. Add in cranberries and sugar.
Stir over medium heat until sugar dissolves and the mixture comes to a boil. Continue to boil until most of the berries pop and the mixture is thick, stirring occasionally (about 10 minutes) remove from heat. Add in drained pineapple, walnuts, lemon juice and cloves; mix until well combined. Transfer to a bowl and cool to room temperature.
Cover and refrigerate for 24 hours.

Green Bean Casserole

This is the classic green bean casserole you have had at many thanksgiving dinners throughout the years. The recipe has not changed and can’t be easier.

INGREDIENTS:

1 (10 3/4 ounce) cans condensed cream of mushroom soup
1/4 cup milk
1/8 teaspoon black pepper
2 (14 1/2 ounce) cans cut green beans, drained
1 1/3 cups French-fried onions (French’s)

PREPARATION:

Combine soup, milk and pepper in a 1 1/2 qt baking dish; stir until blended.
Stir in beans and 2/3 cup fried onions.Bake at 350°F for 30 minutes or until hot. Stir.
Sprinkle with remaining 2/3 cup fried onions.Bake 5 more minutes or until onions are golden.

Smoking the Bird

For generations people have been dropping turkeys into the oven and roasting for hours. They use stuffings and little pop up timers. Guess what? You can make a great turkey this way, but wouldn’t it be great to go one step further? Smoked turkey is more flavorful and tender than one roasted in the oven. Breaking away from tradition can be hard, but let the people over all About.com walk you through the process.

The Basics:

Here’s what you are going to do. You are going to smoke your turkey to an internal temperature of 165 degrees F. This means that the coldest part of the turkey is 165 degrees F. This isn’t a suggestion. Test in at least two places (or more) and remember that turkey bones heat faster so keep the thermometer away from bone. Also, dark meat should be cooked to a higher temperature so worry about the breast, but make sure to check the thighs as well.

Deep Fried Turkey

How To Deep Fry a Turkey

As the popularity of Cajun Deep Fried Turkey has continued to grow, a whole industry has sprung up to support it. The problem is that most people face a big problem trying to do this on their stove. Namely, it makes a terrible mess and it’s dangerous to do in an enclosed space. The answer is to take it outdoors. But be warned, this can be a expensive operation, but well worth it. For those of you who don’t know what a deep fried turkey is like, let me give you the basics of the process.

How to Deep Fry a Turkey:

Step One: Get a turkey, a very large cooking pot, and some cooking oil. vegetable oil can be used, but it’s better to use peanut oil. Peanut oil is very expensive and several gallons are going to be needed.

Step Two: Prepare the turkey. It needs to be defrosted and washed. Make sure there are no pop up tender timer devices or anything left inside. And, most importantly it must be completely dry. I mean really, really dry. You know what happens when you put water in boiling oil, don’t you. You will also need to truss the turkey, meaning you need to secure the legs, neck flap, wings and tail to the body of the turkey.

Step Three: To determine the perfect amount of oil you are going to be using, place the turkey in the pot and add water until the turkey is completely covered plus two inches. With the turkey and the water there should still be several inches of room between the oil and the top of the pot. If it’s a close call, then you need either a bigger pot or a smaller turkey. Remove the turkey and measure the water. This is the amount of oil that will be needed.

Step Four: Dry and season the turkey. Various recipes will call for seasoning rubs or injection mixtures. You’ll find out more on this in the coming posts.

Step Five: Make sure that your frying pot is completely dry. Water left behind can cause some serious problems once the oil is added and starts heating up.

Step Six: Add the oil to the pot and bring it to a temperature of about 375 degrees. You should really get a good thermometer so you can get the temperatures right.

Step Seven: This is where it gets tricky. The turkey needs to be room temperature and dry. Turn off the burner when you put the turkey in. You are going to lower the turkey into the pot of very hot oil. The oil is going to splatter. You need some very good cooking gloves and a way to put the turkey in the oil while you are a safe distance. This is the reason why it’s really not that good of an idea to do it on your stove top. There are now devices to help you like Deep Fried Turkey Lifter for $39.95 that give you a good hold on the turkey. Now I have heard of people using a wire basket on the turkey and a wooden board to do this. A bit of inventing and I’m sure you’ll find a way. Anyway, slowly lower the turkey into the oil.

A good method here is dunking. When you lower the turkey into the oil it will boil up. This is why you want the burner off when you do it. People have been burned by hot oil hitting the burner. You might not need to do more than a single dunk but you should be prepared to raise the bird out of the oil it it starts boiling up. You can greatly reduce the mess and risk of personal injury by lifting the bird up as the oil boils around it. A couple of dunks and the turkey should be nicely settled in.

Step Eight: Once the bird is safely resting in the oil, turn the burner back on to get to a temperature of 350 degrees F. At this point you can go take a breather. But don’t wander too far because that turkey will be done soon. A deep fried turkey cooks at a rate of about 3 to 3 1/2 minutes per pound. A ten pound turkey should take 30-35 minutes. An instant read thermometer can help you test for doneness, but of course you will need to lift the turkey out to test it.

Step Nine: Remove the turkey from the oil when it’s done. Do this slowly and after you have turned off the burner. Let the turkey drain a little bit and you’re set to go.

Step Ten: Carve and enjoy. If you have never had a turkey cooked this way then you have not finished your life requirements. Do this and you may never put a turkey in the oven again. Despite what you might think this turkey is not oily or greasy. It’s crisp, juicy and delicious.

Of course I know that if you put your mind to it you can come up with a good cooker arrangement. But there are a couple of things this cooker needs: a good stock pot, a controllable heat source and a way to safely get the turkey in the oil and out again.

DEEP-FRIED TURKEY

INGREDIENTS

whole turkey, completely thawed
seasoned rub
peanut oil

PREPARATION
1. Get a huge pot, like a stock pot. Put the turkey (completely thawed) in the pot, add water to completely surround the turkey. Look at how much water you added; that’s how much oil you will need. Pour out the water and dry off the turkey.
2. Put a seasoned rub on the turkey. You don’t have to, but it makes the skin delicious.
3. Fill the pot with as much oil as you need..The more the better. This is where it gets expensive, because you need at least a couple gallons of oil. The better quality oils (like peanut oil) will get hotter, and work better, but you can use a cheaper oil. Now, get the oil as hot as possible, and as close to 400 as possible without excessive smoking.
4. Turn off the burner (this is a precaution to prevent spatters from hitting an open flame). Add the turkey. You can use a 2 by 4 piece of wood (thru the wrapped legs) to lower the turkey into the oil. WARNING: the oil really splatters out at this point, so STAY back. This is MESSY! Once the spattering has stopped, turn the burner back on.
5. After you add the turkey, the oil temp. will drop rapidly. That’s why you want it as hot as possible to begin with. Hopefully, it will remain around 350 degrees, so it sears the skin, and the meat does NOT get greasy.
6. Cook for about 3 min per pound, + 5 minutes. It the turkey is over 18 lbs, you might want to go 3 min per pound +10 or 15 minutes.
Turkey done this way is very tender and moist, and amazingly not greasy…

Six Steps to Carving the Perfect Turkey

Thanksgiving Info

How to Pick a Turkey

The rule of thumb when buying a Thanksgiving turkey is to estimate one pound of meat per person. If you have a little extra time and money to spend, consider getting your turkey from a nearby farm. In addition to supporting the local economy, you get the freshest meat possible and won’t have to worry about defrosting. Fresh turkeys should remain refrigerated until cooked. If you buy a frozen bird, follow the tips in step two.

How to Defrost Your Turkey

You can defrost a turkey in the refrigerator or in cold water. In the fridge, you need approximately 24 hours for every 4-5 pounds of turkey. Cold water thawing takes only 30 minutes per pound of meat. You must change the water every 30 minutes, however, and refrigerate or cook your bird immediately after thawing.

Prepping Your Bird

To add extra flavor and tenderize your turkey, consider taking the time to marinate or brine it before roasting. The jury’s still out on which method creates a tastier bird, so try one this year and the other next November and let your family decide!

To Marinate: Use a fork to make holes over the whole turkey. Put the bird in a large, sturdy plastic bag, add the marinade (homemade or purchased), close the bag, and let your bird marinate overnight in the refrigerator. Be sure to discard leftover marinade before cooking the turkey.

To Brine: Prepare the brining solution, mixing 2 cups of table salt with 2 gallons of cold water in a large, clean container. You can add dried herbs to the brine, and some chefs also use brown sugar, a few cloves of garlic, or even dried red chili peppers. Submerge the turkey in the brining solution and refrigerate for 6-8 hours. Before cooking, thoroughly wash the turkey, removing all remnants of the brine.

Stuffing – Let Your Creativity Reign

While you can buy stuffing mixes, the homemade alternative is much tastier, and not as hard to prepare as you might think. There are a myriad of stuffing combinations, including a few creative twists. Here are a few:

Apples & Cranberries
Dried Fruit and Nuts Marinated in Orange Juice
Wild Rice & Cornbread
Sausage & Chestnuts
Oyster Stuffing

Many pros recommend always cooking stuffing outside the bird to prevent salmonella poisoning. In this case, you can still put an aromatic inside the bird to enhance the flavor, such as a satchel of herbs, a combination of fruit, or a Mirepoix. If you cook the stuffing in the bird, make absolute certain that you check the internal temperature to ensure it has cooked completely.

Whatever method you choose, preparing stuffing the day before Thanksgiving is a great way to save time on the big day. Just remember to keep the wet (vegetables, fruit, broth, etc) and dry ingredients separate until it’s time to cook them.

Roast a Moist Turkey

Sure you can deep fry or grill, but for most Americans, roasting is the way to enjoy this Thanksgiving staple. Use a roasting pan with low sides and add a cup of water to the bottom to help with clean-up after the meal. Roast at a minimum of 325° F until the internal temperature registers 165° F on a food thermometer. Be sure to check the meat’s temperature both at the thickest part of the breast and on the inner thigh and wing to ensure that the whole bird is thoroughly cooked. If you’ve stuffed the turkey, make sure that the center of the stuffing has also reached 165°F.

Carving Your Bird

Letting the turkey sit for 20 minutes after removing it from the oven allows the juices to set and makes the carver’s job much easier. While it’s intimidating to slice into such a masterpiece, the best way to learn to carve a turkey is to practice! Using a sharp, straight knife helps you with this delicate task.

Experts also recommend removing the drumstick and wing before cutting into the highly coveted breast meat. Once you do, cut a vertical line along the center of the breast–there should be a cartilage ridge down the center. Next, cut a horizontal line along the breast bone, starting from the outside and moving toward your vertical cut. Do this for both sides. Then, slice the breast meat at a slight slant from the outside of the breast to the center. Layer meat on a slightly warm platter, and serve soon to prevent the meat from drying out

The Most Important Thanksgiving Lesson

Whether you opt for an elaborate feast or a casual dinner, your Thanksgiving meal will be special because you share it with loved ones. Give yourself time, relax, and enjoy your time in the kitchen. Whether you’re a pro trying new things or a first-time cook planning your first feast, savor the process and take pride in your hard work.

Turkey Day and the NFL

NFL games are as much a part of Thanksgiving as turkey, mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie. This year’s holiday features a heaping helping of intriguing matchups:
» Chicago Bears @ Detroit Lions
» Philadelphia Eagles @ Dallas Cowboys
» Seattle Seahawks @ San Francisco 49ers

It’s been a while since every Thanksgiving NFL game was a great matchup. There’s always a dud.

Not this year. By making a tweak with the networks, the NFL guaranteed three tremendous matchups, and it will be all NFC teams. The day starts with Chicago at Detroit, followed by Philadelphia at Dallas and capped off by the big one, Seattle at San Francisco, a rematch of the NFC championship game and one of the top few games on the entire NFL regular-season schedule. That is the best Thanksgiving schedule, top to bottom, in many years.

Part of the problem in past years was network rules. Fox gets NFC games. CBS gets AFC games. If there is an NFC vs. AFC game, the network of the road team’s conference got the game (for example, if it was an AFC team at an NFC team, CBS had the rights). Because traditional hosts Dallas and Detroit are both from the NFC, there needed to be an AFC team involved to meet those guidelines. Therefore, options were limited. Last year, the Raiders were one of two AFC teams to visit Dallas during the season, and because it was Dallas’ turn to be on CBS (Detroit and Dallas alternate Thanksgiving games on CBS), that mediocre game ended up on Thanksgiving. This year the Lions’ Thanksgiving game would have had to have been either Buffalo or Miami, and neither one is a knockout matchup. Instead, the NFL decided to bend those guidelines. They added a “cross-flex” option for the league to move games between CBS and FOX. CBS, the home of AFC games, will carry the Bears-Lions game. Fox will have the Cowboys’ showdown with the NFC East champs, and NBC will handle the 49ers-Seahawks showdown.

Thanksgiving is a time to be spent with family. Usually you had a window during the “boring” game to get in that quality turkey and touch football time. Not this year. Start making plans to have an eye on the TV starting when the Lions and Bears kick off at 12:30 p.m. Eastern time until the 49ers and Seahawks are through beating up on each other. This is going to be pretty good.
