We are in the middle of spring, flowers are blooming and the weather is getting warmer. Summer is right around the corner, but lets enjoy the cool nights while we can.

The month of May is traditionally known as the month for mothers. It was named for the Greek goddess Maia, the goddess of fertility, the goddess of May. Maybe this is why Mothers Day has been established during this very month.

But most importantly, May is National Hamburger Month sponsored by White Castle, the original fast-food hamburger chain (founded in 1921), to pay tribute to one of America’s favorite foods. Coincidentally, It’s National Barbecue Month.

But you are reading this because you are interested in May Sports, and do we got a lot to choose from!

It can certainly be argued that nothing in sports is better than playoff hockey, and the first round of the NHL’s Stanley Cup playoffs has certainly been indicative of that thus far. There’s something magical about the Stanley Cup Playoffs that no other sport can duplicate. As we head into May and the second round of the playoffs, it’s sure to get better. Click here for the Stanley Cup Playoff schedule.

This year’s NBA Playoffs schedule is the same as usual, back in ’14, the NBA Finals switched to a 2-2-1-1-1 format, discarding the old 2-3-2 format that had been in use since 1985. We got you covered with the full NBA Playoffs Schedule, the and links to great sites across the web to follow the action.

As we head into May, we are starting to get a feel for who the teams are to beat in the Majors. Team’s rotations have had a handful of starts and we are seeing who the good arms are. Click here for the FANFOOD Top 10 MLB teams, the Major League Baseball Full Schedule for May, and a list of all the Nationally Broadcast Games this month.

NASCAR holds its annual All-Star race in May and it’s at the Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord, NC. You might think that The GEIGO 500 is the biggest auto race of the month, and you would be wrong,

The 101st Running of the Indianapolis 500, is and it all goes down Sunday May 28 at 12:00pm. The Indianapolis 500 is the worlds most famous and prestigious auto race. It has taken place annually since 1911 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway except for 1917-18 and 1942-45 during America’s participation in world wars. “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing” covers 500 miles, 200 laps on the famous 2.5-mile oval. “500” is the world’s largest single-day spectator sporting event. Whatever you preference, Open Wheel or Stock Car, we got you covered with links to all the races, schedules and more.

If you like racing then you love May. The 2017 Kentucky Derby is always the first Saturday in May and this year that falls on the 6th. The run at Churchill Downs a one and a quarter mile track, and the race is known as “The Most Exciting Two Minutes In Sports” or “The Fastest Two Minutes in Sports” for its approximate duration, and is also called “The Run for the Roses” for the blanket of roses draped over the winner. It is the first leg of the US Triple Crown and is followed by the Preakness Stakes, then the Belmont Stakes. Unlike the Preakness and Belmont Stakes, which took hiatuses in 1891-1893 and 1911-1912 respectively, the Kentucky Derby has been run every consecutive year since 1875. Click here for a ton of links for first two jewels of the crowns full lineups post positions and more.

2017 marks the 116th edition of the French Open and the second Grand Slam event of the year. It will take place at the Stade Roland Garros from May 22nd to June 5th. Click here for all the details from the Clay tournament. Of course that is not the only Professional Tennis Tournament in May, for the full schedule click here for links to all the ATP and WTA tennis tournaments this month.

A major highlight of the PGA Tour, the Players Championship is the richest tournament of the year with the strongest and deepest field -— featuring 50 of the world’s top golfers competing for the $1 million-plus prize at Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. Golf fans know the course best for its infamous 137-yard 17th hole – better known as the “Island Green” – which historically raises the blood pressure of even the coolest players. Below is the complete TV coverage airing on NBC and The Golf Channel – beginning Thursday, May 11th including a dramatic Sunday final on May 14th. Click here for memorable moments, links and more from TPC. Like Tennis, this is not the only tournament for the professionals in May, click here for the complete schedule and links to all the events.

Outside of sports, May is full of reasons to gather with friends, family and neighbors. In addition to all these great sports matchups, May is home to Mother’s Day, Cinco de Mayo, Star Wars Day, (May the 4th be with you) and of course, the unofficial start of summer, Memorial Day. National Hockey League Playoffs

An incredible round one of the playoffs have come to an end and there’s a lot to talk about.

Forty-two games later, 18 of which went into overtime, the first round of the playoffs has come to an end. The 18 games that went past regulation are the most games in a single round to ever go to overtime.

The first round lived up to every bit of the hype surrounding it.

There were two sweeps, and if you predicted the Nashville Predators to have one of them, you’re lying.

In the East, the Toronto Maple Leafs gave the top-seeded Washington Capitals an incredible battle, forcing five of six games to overtime. Every game in that series was decided by a single goal.

The second round will be a lot of fun.

Headlining the matchups is Crosby’s Pens vs. Ovie’s Caps, but beyond that, there are a lot of great matchups in store.

The Predators are on top of the world right now and they will assuredly be a huge handful for the Blues in round two, the Rangers and Senators are both coming off 4-2 series wins, and my most highly anticipated series is the Ducks vs. the Oilers.

The Oilers are built off of speed and the Ducks are built off of a big, physical power game.

You’re talking Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl vs. Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry.

Their differing styles are intriguing, and both Cam Talbot and John Gibson have been great in the postseason.

Going into the postseason, it looked like Washington’s Stanley Cup to lose, and it still is the case, but they’re going to have a tough time with Pittsburgh.

The Penguins are deep, talented, and they still have the best player on the planet in Sidney Crosby. Beyond him, Evgeni Malkin and Phil Kessel have both been phenomenal, and still lesser known players in Bryan Rust and Jake Guentzel have been scoring goals at a high rate.

Marc-Andre Fleury was good against Columbus and they’ll need him to continue that run without Matt Murray.

The second round started on Wednesday with Nashville vs. St. Louis and Edmonton vs. Anaheim at 10:30 pm EST. The Eastern Conference games started on Thursday.

Here is the second round schedule that continues in to May.

Major League Baseball

Given that we haven’t even gotten to May, broad, sweeping conclusions about teams can be folly, but we can start to kind of figure out what teams got off to slow starts and seem like they probably aren’t going to have good seasons. I think the Blue Jays fit the bill there. The Royals probably do, too, as I predicted heading into the year.
How about the Giants?

They won the World Series in 2014 and then made the playoffs last season with a similar nucleus. They needed to shore up the bullpen in the offseason and added closer Mark Melancon. Sure, there were holes (left field, where a 52-year-old Barry Bonds seems like he’d be an easy upgrade), but overall, many believed heading into the season that this would be a playoff contender.

As things stand, they are 7-14, have looked pretty poor in several areas and won’t have Madison Bumgarner back until around the All-Star break. To write them off would be foolish, but we can reasonably say that it’s possible this won’t be a good team in 2017. It’s pretty fair to say that they look bad, really, and that’s a surprise.

In fact, the way the entire NL West looks right now is pretty wild.

The Rockies look outstanding and have surged to number five in the Official Power Rankings. They started the season without Ian Desmond and David Dahl, but Mark Reynolds and Gerardo Parra have stepped up and helped the cause. That’s what happens on good teams. The “next man up” mentality manifests itself into winning baseball. Last September, I championed the Rockies as a possible breakout team for 2017 and most of that still stands up. This doesn’t mean I’m declaring them a playoff team on April 26, but I do think they’ll contend.

Will the Diamondbacks as well? Not much went right for them in 2016, but there’s a decent amount of talent on this team and it has started 14-8 with a very powerful offense. Pitching will probably catch up to them at some point, though the rotation has the ability to be very good. Think if they get the best versions of Zack Greinke, Robbie Ray, Shelby Miller, Patrick Corbin and Taijuan Walker? Again, there’s talent. Also, here’s fun one: The D-Backs are 10-2 at home. They didn’t win their 10th home game last season until June 7.
The Padres, well, they aren’t very good but I don’t think many believed they would have eight wins at this point in the season. Some of their younger players have shown nice flashes of upside, too. Overall, given the state of the franchise, it has to be considered an encouraging start. Or, at the very least, not a horrible one.

We’re forging a big, bold future. Come take a look.

Meantime, the four-time defending division champion Dodgers have injury woes and haven’t yet hit their stride, sitting 10-11. They usually do and probably will, notably when they get healthier.

Regardless, the scene has been set for a topsy-turvy season in the wild, wild (NL) West. Let’s hope it keeps up, because pennant races are a lot more exciting when upstart, unexpected teams hang around in contention.

Indianapolis 500

Sunday, May 28

It’s the annual speedfest featuring top drivers in high gear participating in one of the most popular American car racing events.

Now heading into its 101st year, the Indy 500 continues to entertain fans with an action-packed race that is one of the premier sporting events worldwide.

This year the Indy 500 takes place on Sunday, May 28, 2017 as the green flag goes down at noon during a fun and festive Memorial Day 2017 weekend.

In keeping with the summer party atmosphere, the race is traditionally preceded by the Indy 500 Festival, a month-long celebration in Indianapolis leading up to the race.

Full TV coverage of the 101st running of the Indy 500 airs on ABC Sports with a traditional 12 PM ET starting time — as top drivers line up to vie for one of racing’s highest honors… victory at the Indianapolis 500.

With all the hoopla surrounding the race, the day doesn’t end when the last car crosses the finish line in Indy.

Hard on the heels of the Indy 500 is more fast-paced NASCAR racing action at the Coca Cola 600 on FOX.

The “Brickyard” got its name when 3.2 million street paving bricks were laid on the track in 1909. Today, one yard of the historic brickwork is still exposed at the start-finish line.
Today, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is the world’s largest spectator sporting facility, with more than 250,000 permanent seats.

The Roman Colosseum, Yankee Stadium, the White House, Vatican City, the Taj Mahal, the Rose Bowl, and Churchill Downs can all easily fit inside the oval which encompasses a whopping 253 acres.

The biggest nail-biter (and closest margin of victory) at the Indy 500 was in 1992 when Al Unser Jr. edged out Scott Goodyear by .043 of a second.

The tradition of drinking buttermilk in Victory Lane began with three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Louis Meyer who refreshed himself with a quart of the dairy drink after winning the 1936 race.

The youngest winner of the Indy 500 was Troy Ruttman who was 22 years-old when he won the 36th Indianapolis 500 on May 30, 1952. The oldest winner of the Indianapolis 500 was 47-year-old Al Unser. He won the 71st Indianapolis 500 on May 24, 1987.

The Run for the Black-Eyed Susans – May 20

This year marks the 142nd running of the $1 million Preakness Stakes, the middle jewel of the Triple Crown. By tradition, three year olds run the one and 3/16th mile track at Pimlico in Baltimore, Maryland with more than a dozen horses traditionally lined up for the Preakness Stakes. For major contenders in Baltimore, horse racing fans looked to the previous Kentucky Derby lineup which often result in a handful of Preakness favorites. Of course, that doesn’t discount the odds of some unknown dark horse sneaking up from behind for the win… and a major upset! Meanwhile, for word on this year’s lineup of 2017 Preakness odds and post positions use the links below for when the official list is announced from Baltimore.

Finally, on race day, it will be “riders up!” when all the televised action takes place at Pimlico on NBC at 4:30 PM ET on Saturday, May 20th, with post time approx, 6:20 PM ET.

What may be the most disturbing Preakness infield tradition of all: the annual port-o-potty run, in which drunk people run across the tops of port-o-potties while being pelted by beer cans.

Only in Ballmer!

Preakness Stakes fun facts:

  • The black eyed susan is Maryland’s state flower
  • The Preakness is named after the horse who won the first stakes ever run in Pimlico when its doors first opened on May 27, 1873.
  • The Preakness Stakes is sometimes dubbed “The Run for the Black-Eyed Susans” because a blanket of Viking daisies, decorated to look like Black-eyed Susans, is traditionally placed around the winner’s neck. Actual Black-eyed Susans — the state flower of Maryland — are not in season during the Preakness.
  • The official drink of the Preakness Stakes is the Black Eyed Susan cocktail made with orange juice and vodka.
  • The Friday before the Preakness is Black-Eyed Susan Day at Pimlico where a party atmosphere and entertainment prevails along with the running of the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes for 3-year-old fillies, with appearances by notable female jockeys.
  • While celebrations in Baltimore may take days, the actual Preakness Stakes race lasts an average 2 1/2 minutes.

May 11 – 14

Since it’s inception in 1982 by then-PGA TOUR Commissioner Deane Beman, TPC Sawgrass has risen to the front of the golfing world’s consciousness; its Pete Dye fan-friendly design a mix of precision and target golf.

From the iconic Island Green on 17, to the renovations made since the conclusion of last year’s tournament, featuring a now drivable par 4 on 12, TPC Sawgrassis one of the most recognizable courses in the world.

Don’t miss Jason Day return to defend his title from May 9-14, 2017 at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.

New + Improved for THE PLAYERS 2017

Recent improvements include significant mounding work done as part of the course renovation between the 2006 and 2007 events, and then there were further mounding changes around No. 2 green and No. 3 tee before the 2010 event and around No. 18 green for the 2011 event. In 2016, THE PLAYERS enhanced viewing with mounds on 11 green, 12 tee, 15 green and a lowered mound on 4 tee. The hospitality venues on 17 became two-storied, creating another level of ticketed hospitality venues for viewing.

Toward that goal of continual improvement, THE PLAYERS Stadium Course has undergone additional changes for the 2017 event:

· The Davis Love III gate is now located off the entrance of Club Service Drive and will act as our VIP entrance gate.
· New fan bleacher on No. 12.
· All greens resurfaced with TifEagle bermudagrass from Mini Verde.
· Redesigned No. 12 into a risk/reward drivable par 4.
· Created lake between holes Nos. 6 and 7.
· Rebuilt all bunkers and regressed bunker surround with Celebration bermudagrass.

Each year THE PLAYERS strives to improve preexisting aspects of the tournament. 2017 tournament improvements include:

· The Blue Room VIP Lounge presented by Michelob ULTRA will now be located behind No. 17, adjacent to the Welcome Experience and open Thursday – Sunday.
· Redesigned Practice Grounds to improve visual elements and create a world-class practice area.
· Redesigned/expanded TOUR member short game practice area and teeing ground.
· Repositioned tee on No. 7 and shifted tee back on No. 15.
· Recaptured the original green size on Nos. 3 and 6.
· Modified green contours on No. 8.
· Expanded greens for new hole locations on holes Nos. 1, 4, 9, 11 and 13.

Cinco de Mayo

- Friday, May 5th -

In Mexico or wherever the culture is celebrated — families, friends and neighbors gather on the 5th of May to celebrate Cinco de Mayo! It’s popular to believe that Cinco de Mayo is an observance of Mexican independence, but the festival actually celebrates an obscure victory of 4,000 ill-equipped Mexicans over 8,000 armed French invaders in 1862. The battle known as La Batalla de Puebla, The Battle of Puebla, took place on (you guessed it) May 5. Today, all is forgiven, with fiestas planned in Mexico and in many communities around the world where Mexicans live.

Mostly, It’s used by restaurants to sell more fajitas and by party stores to sell more Sombreros.  It’s a good time to try out your latin skills on the grill. Here are some recipes for you to use:

Star Wars Day

- Thursday, May 4th -

May 4th  is considered a holiday by Star Wars fans to celebrate Star Wars culture and honor the films. It is called Star Wars Day because of the popularity of a common pun spoken on this day. Since the phrase “May the Force be with you” is a famous quote often spoken in the Star Wars films, fans commonly say “May the fourth be with you” on this day. Current day Star Wars fans were not the first to introduce the line “May the fourth be with you”.

In a 2005 interview on German news TV channel N24, Star Wars creator George Lucas was asked to say the famous sentence “May the Force be with you.” The interpreter simultaneously interpreted the sentence into German as Am 4. Mai sind wir bei Ihnen (“We shall be with you on May 4″).

The fun jumps to light speed – with great ideas for a Star Wars party!

Whether you’re planning a birthday, a movie night celebration, or partying in observance of Star Wars Day on May 4 (“May the 4th be with you!”) here are some great ideas for hosting one of the best party themes on the planet:

Star Wars party Invitations – Blast off by creating your own Star Wars party invitations with Star Wars clip art using headlines like “You’re invited to an ‘out of this world’ Star Wars party!” or “Come to the best gathering in the galaxy!”

Star Wars party food – Get creative by whipping up some Skywalker salsa and chips, galactic party punch, Yoda soda (be sure it’s green!), oatmeal Wookiee cookies, and top it off with homemade sheet cake decorated with Star Wars Lego or action figures.

Star Wars party games & activities – For the younger set, get the crayons out and provide Star Wars printables and coloring pages to keep little hands busy. Older kids might appreciate a good round of Star Wars trivia with prizes given to the most knowledgeable Star Wars fan, or form party-goers into groups to reenact their favorite Star Wars movie scene.

Party favors & goodie bags: – Fill ‘em up with Star Wars novelty candy, cards and stickers, or small toys & keepsakes available online or in most toy or party goods stores.
