I am sure everyone is ready for spring. It has been a tough winter for most of the U.S. and as February draws to a close, basketball fans will soon be able to celebrate the arrival of March Madness, the most exciting time of the year. The season ending conference tournaments begin soon and there should be some interesting storylines to follow.

In college basketball the only thing as important as the NCAA Tournament is the conference tournament. All season long teams across the country compete for a winning record that will guarantee them a top seed in the conference tournament. Earning a top seed comes with its benefits as in some instances it could grant teams with a first and/or second round bye. For teams that struggle during the regular season the conference tournament is the light at the end of the tunnel that can send them to the NCAA Tournament regardless of past performances. Winners of each conference tournament are crowned as conference champions and receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. We got you covered with information on all the 2014 Conference Tournaments, with full schedules, links and more. But before we get to them there is a week or so left in the regular season. Click here for the AP Top 25 teams in College Basketball, and the full schedule with TV listings as they fight for their tournament seeds.

The 2014 NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Tournament will begin on March 18, 2014, and will conclude with the championship game on April 7 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The East Regional will be held in Madison Square Garden, the first time the current MSG has been used as an NCAA Tournament venue and the first time in 40 years games have been held in the city of New York. A total of 24 cities will host the 2014 and 2015 NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Championships. Dayton and Indianapolis will see action during both seasons. Click here to see when and where each round will take place.

The 2014 Spring Training exhibition schedule began with a full slate of games involving all 30 Major League Clubs on Friday, February 28th, and the games will continue throughout March as they prepare for The 2014 Major League Baseball season set to begin on March 22 in Sydney, Australia between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Arizona Diamondbacks. The North American part of the season will start on March 30 and end on September 28. Click here for the complete MLB Spring Training Schedule including all the games on TV.

The 2014 Championship Season will begin in Sydney, Australia on March 22nd and 23rd, 2014, when the Diamondbacks and the Dodgers play at the historic Sydney Cricket Ground. While the 2014 Major League Baseball season gets started in Australia with the two-game series Down Under, The San Diego Padres take on the Dodgers in primetime on ESPN on Sunday, March 30, and all other teams will begin play on March 31 or April 1. Click here is a complete schedule of opening day games.

As the calendar flips to March the Penguins head into Soldier Field for an open-air showdown against the champion Blackhawks. Soldier Field is set to host its first NHL game. The Chicago Blackhawks and Pittsburgh Penguins will face off there on March 1 in a regular-season game that will be part of the 2014 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series, which also included two games at Yankee Stadium in New York, one at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles and the 2014 Tim Horton‘s NHL Heritage Classic on March 2. More than 60,000 people are expected to attend the Penguins-Blackhawks, which will mark Chicago’s second time hosting an outdoor contest. The next day, the Vancouver Canucks will face the Ottawa Senators at BC Place. The 2014 Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic™ will mark the first time a hockey game has ever been played at BC Place – it will also be the biggest crowd ever to watch the Vancouver Canucks. For the rest of the league, March is where it gets really interesting as teams fight for the playoffs. Click here for every NHL game this month including the TV listings.

The NBA also interesting this month as teams are also trying to get those coveted spots for the playoffs and we got you covered with every NBA on TV and the full schedule for the next 31 days.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. did what a lot of NASCAR fans did during the six-plus-hour rain delay at Daytona International Speedway on Sunday: he put on some sweat pants, sat on the couch, ate a bunch of candy, played with the dogs, talked to his girlfriend, watched some TV, ate some junk food. Later, he kept the fans in Junior Nation on the edge of their seats as Earnhardt went on to his second Daytona 500 victory. But that was just the start, as NASCAR rolls into March, there are some great races on the schedule.

But that’s not all, March is also the home to some great Golf and Professional Tennis Tournaments. Click Here for the PGA Schedule of Events and the ATP Men’s and Women’s Matches.

But if you are like us, you love to drink beer and what better time than St. Patrick’s Day? You know that we would cover that as well, Click here for some great Irish Recipes and information on the Real Saint Patrick.

Bring on Spring!

Conference Tournaments

In college basketball the only thing as important as the NCAA Tournament is the conference tournament. All season long teams across the country compete for a winning record that will guarantee them a top seed in the conference tournament. Earning a top seed comes with its benefits as in some instances it could grant teams with a first and/or second round bye. For teams that struggle during the regular season the conference tournament is the light at the end of the tunnel that can send them to the NCAA Tournament regardless of past performances. Winners of each conference tournament are crowned as conference champions and receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Most Division 1 Conferences host a tournament at the end of the regular season to determine the leagues champion. However, conferences that do not hold a tournament determine a champion based on regular season standings. The conference tournaments are usually broken down into four rounds but may vary depending on the conference. These tournaments can be just as exciting as watching the NCAA Tournament as teams leave it all on the court with high hopes of advancing into March Madness.

Before the start of the Big Dance however, it’s the conference tournaments that can produce just as much drama as the main course. From bubble teams needing important wins, to Cinderella stories trying to win automatic bids, to big-time teams trying to cinch down a number one seed, this year’s rendition of conference tournaments should prove to be just as important.

There should be some interesting storylines to follow in the 2014 conference tournaments. Assuming that the Wichita State Shockers can finish their remaining regular season slate undefeated, they will have a shot at entering the NCAA tournament undefeated with a No. 1 seed. However, history has shown that anything can happen at the Missouri Valley Conference tournament, so there is always the potential of a major upset there. In addition, with the 2014 college basketball season billed as the greatest crop of freshmen ever, first-year players that have struggled such as those playing for the Kentucky Wildcats will have a chance to redeem themselves with a conference tournament championship following a sub-par conference regular season.

While teams sitting squarely on the bubble such as the Oklahoma State Cowboys and the Tennessee Volunteers will have their work cut out for them in the first rounds of their respective conference tournaments, many fans will be focused squarely on the teams that step up to take the conference tournament crowns.

March Madness

NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament

The 2014 NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Tournament will involve 68 teams playing in a single-elimination tournament to determine the national champion of men’s NCAA Division I college basketball. It is scheduled to begin on March 18, 2014, and will conclude with the championship game on April 7 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

The East Regional will be held in Madison Square Garden, the first time the current MSG has been used as an NCAA Tournament venue and the first time in 40 years games have been held in the city of New York. Pending any changes to the current format, a total of 68 teams will enter the 2014 tournament. Thirty-one of the 32 automatic bids teams will be given to the program that wins their conference tournament. The remaining automatic bid will go to the Ivy League regular season champion since they do not hold a conference tournament. The remaining 36 teams will be granted “at-large” bids, which are extended by the NCAA Selection Committee.

Tune in March 16th for the 2014 NCAA Selection
Sunday at 6pm ET on CBS!

MLB Opening Series & Opening Day

The 2014 Championship Season will begin in Sydney, Australia on March 22nd and 23rd, 2014, when the Diamondbacks and the Dodgers play at the historic Sydney Cricket Ground.

The MLB Opening Series Sydney featuring the National League West rivals will be Major League Baseball’s first regular season games to be staged in Australia. MLB has previously opened seasons in Monterrey, Mexico (1999); Tokyo, Japan (2000, 2004, 2008, 2012); and San Juan, Puerto Rico (2001).

MLB Opening Series Sydney will mark the 100th anniversary of exhibition games played by the Chicago White Sox and the New York Giants at the same sports venue where the 2014 Opening Series will be played. The White Sox defeated the Giants, 5-4, before 10,000 fans on January 3, 1914. Major League Baseball’s history at the Sydney Cricket Ground dates to December 1888, when Spalding’s World Tourists played a series of exhibition games, including a December 15, 1888 contest that attracted 5,500 spectators. The Sydney Cricket Ground will be fully renovated to a baseball configuration and Major League standards in advance of hosting MLB Opening Series Sydney.

The “MLB Network Special Presentation: Opening Series Sydney” will feature Matt Vasgersian and John Smoltz from MLB Network in the broadcast booth and commentary from Ian Chappell of Nine Network, a former Australia cricket captain and a member of the International Cricket Council Hall of Fame. MLB Network’s telecasts will air in the U.S. on Saturday, March 22 with the first game live at 4:00 a.m. ET, immediately followed by a replay telecast at 7:00 a.m. ET, and the second game live at 10:00 p.m. ET. In Australia, ESPN will also exclusively broadcast the exhibition games that the Diamondbacks and Dodgers will play against Team Australia prior to the two regular season games.

For over a century, baseball has been hailed above all other sports as America’s National Pastime. And no other game during the regular one-hundred sixty-two game season has been as eagerly anticipated as Opening Day. Ask any fan what the “official” start of Spring is. Chances are their answer will be Opening Day. Much more than just an event, it is an experience. For baseball fans, Opening Day serves as a symbol of rebirth. Many feel that the occasion represents a newness or a chance to forget last season.

While the 2014 Major League Baseball season gets started in Australia on Saturday, March 22, when the Los Angeles Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks begin a two-game series Down Under, The San Diego Padres take on the Dodgers in primetime on ESPN on Sunday, March 30, and all other teams will begin play on March 31 or April 1.

National Hockey League

The Olympic break has been beneficial to the Ducks, who will have both goalie Viktor Fasth and forward Nick Bonino back to 100 percent health. Teemu Selanne was named MVP of the Olympic tournament, and Ducks won medals of all three colors. Before the break, Anaheim ended a season-worst three game pointless skid with a decisive victory in Nashville and they are top team in the FANFOOD rankings. Next on the list are the Pens, as they head into Soldier Field for an open-air showdown against the champion Blackhawks, the best team in the East should be eager to prove itself — especially Evgeni Malkin, whose Team Russia bowed out in the quarterfinals. The Blues finished out the top 3 as we head in March and the race for the playoffs. With a ton of players competing in Sochi, St. Louis is probably just happy to have them all home safe. T.J. Oshie became a national hero for his shootout prowess, and David Backes came to the aid of Sochi’s stray dogs.

Wednesday Night Rivalry

NBC Sports Network’s exclusive Wednesday Night Rivalry coverage has returned for a second season and features some of the biggest rivalries in the NHL, including Boston-Montreal, Philadelphia-Pittsburgh and Chicago-Detroit. The network airs exclusive coverage on Wednesday nights for 24 weeks, with games starting at 8 p.m. ET. During its inaugural season, Wednesday Night Rivalry was called “the hottest new brand in sports” by Forbes. It claimed six of the top eight most-watched NHL regular-season telecasts ever on NBC Sports Network and averaged 646,000 viewers. With the success of Wednesday Night Rivalry, the 2013 season was the most-watched NHL regular season on cable in 19 years.

NBC Sports Network 2013-14 NHL Wednesday Night Rivalry schedule – MARCH’14

March 5: Washington at Philadelphia
March 12: Boston at Montreal
March 19: St. Louis at Chicago
March 26: Philadelphia at New York Rangers

It’s been home to the Chicago Bears for more than 40 years, hosted numerous historic events and remains one of the most iconic places in the Windy City.

Now, Soldier Field is set to host its first NHL game.

The Blackhawks played the Detroit Red Wings at Wrigley Field in the 2009 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic.

On Mar. 2, 2014, the Vancouver Canucks® will face the Ottawa Senators® at BC Place. Since opening in 1983, BC Place has hosted some of the province’s most iconic events including musical performances by Michael Jackson; the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2010 Olympic Winter games; as well as visits from Pope John Paul II, and Queen Elizabeth II.

The 2014 Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic™ will mark the first time a hockey game has ever been played at BC Place – it will also be the biggest crowd ever to watch the Vancouver Canucks.

For most longtime members of the Vancouver Canucks, BC Place has been little more than the large, mushroom-topped stadium they drove past almost daily on the way to the rink.

Defenseman Kevin Bieksa is one of the few who has been inside BC Place as a centerpiece on the world stage, a spectator at the opening ceremony for the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. So Thursday, when the Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic launched and a chance to envision BC Place as an outdoor hockey rink for the first time, Bieksa had the best idea of how special it can be.

“I got to experience it and it was unbelievable,” said Bieksa, who was here in February 2010 due to an injury while the rest of the Canucks were on a road trip when the Olympics opened. “The energy in the building was amazing, you could feel it.”

National Basketball Association

There won’t be any 27-game winning streaks this spring from the Miami Heat. But they’re back atop FANFOOD Top 10 for the first time this year. The Heat are on a roll, even a broken nose can’t stop them. LeBron James broke it last week in a contest with the Thunder, but the Heat still managed to beat the Bulls a few days later, holding them to 79 points on 35.8 percent shooting. The second team in our ranking is OKC. Russell Westbrook is finally back! But the Thunder are 0-2 since his return. Uh-oh. As long as Westbrook remains healthy, he and Kevin Durant should get their mojo back in time for the playoffs.  The Pacers round out the top 3 and recently traded for the Sixers’ Evan Turner and Lavoy Allen – getting rid of dead weight Danny Granger – making the NBA’s deepest team that much deeper.

NASCAR – Sprint cup Series

Dale Earnhardt Jr. did what a lot of NASCAR fans did during the six-plus-hour rain delay at Daytona International Speedway on Sunday: he put on some sweat pants, sat on the couch, ate a bunch of candy, played with the dogs, talked to his girlfriend, watched some TV, ate some junk food. Later, he kept the fans in Junior Nation on the edge of their seats as Earnhardt went on to his second Daytona 500 victory.

That’s all well and good, but the question on everyone’s mind is; “What happened to Danica?”

During a 13-car accident on lap 145 of Sunday’s Daytona 500, Danica Patrick suffered a bone-jarring impact against the outside wall in the tri-oval, after contact from Aric Almirola’s Ford damaged the right front of her No. 10 Chevrolet and sent it rocketing into the fence.
As heavy as the hit was, Patrick’s feelings may have been hurt more extensively, given that the wreck destroyed a competitive car and robbed her of a chance at a strong finish in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series opener.

 OUCH!

But what people are really talking about is when Sunday’s Daytona 500 was in a weather delay, Fox aired last year’s edition. Many NASCAR fans were incapable of reading the ticker at the bottom of the screen, and live-tweeted the race out in excitement.

Click here are some of those dumbasses, as compiled by Twitter user @steveluvender.

Enough of living in the past, here are the races of the future…

PGA Tour

The PGA Tour is the organizer of the main professional golf tours played primarily by men in the United States and North America. It organizes most of the events on the flagship annual series of tournaments also known as the PGA Tour, as well as the Champions Tour (for golfers age 50 and older) and the Web.com Tour (for professional players who have not yet qualified to play in the PGA Tour), as well as the PGA Tour Canada and PGA Tour Latinoamérica.

Originally established by the Professional Golfers’ Association of America, it was spun off in December 1968 into a separate organization for tour players, as opposed to club professionals, the focal members of today’s PGA of America. Originally the “Tournament Players Division,” it adopted the name “PGA Tour” in 1975 and runs most of the week-to-week professional golf events on the tournament known as the PGA Tour, including The Players Championship, hosted at the TPC at Sawgrass, the FedEx Cup, and the biennial Presidents Cup. The remaining events on the PGA Tour are run by different organizations, as are the U.S.-based LPGA Tour for women and the other men’s and women’s professional tours around the world.

St. Patrick’s Day

This year St. Patrick’s Day falls on a Monday, and as always is March 17th.

Corned beef and cabbage seems to be the American favorite for St. Patricks Day parties, but the Irish still don’t understand how that came about.

Let’s just say that in the great 19th century melting pot of America something was lost in translation!

Today, there’s no doubt that corn beef and cabbage is the quintessential Irish-American dish.

Whether you’re celebrating St. Patrick’s Day in New York, Boston or Dublin, you’re sure to find other familiar recipes like Irish stew or homemade Irish soda bread to honor the Irish and to celebrate the day.

Of course, what would St. Patrick’s Day be without the green beer? Simply add blue food dye (just remember the magic number 7 – six drops of blue dye per 1 pint of yellow beer) to create your own batch of the holiday’s signature drink.

For the college crowd – don’t forget the lime green jello shots! For everyone else? Guaranteed that nobody doesn’t like a Nutty Irishman cocktail.

Around the Web, take a virtual tour of Irish cooking, featuring an in-depth exploration of the very best of traditional St. Patrick’s Day dinners, along with traditional Irish foods (stews, breads, scones, high teas and other treats) offering complete ingredients and instructions…

 - Crubeens (pig’s trotters), Smoked Cod Pie and Dublin Lawyer (lobster) are some of the Irish foods to be found at this site. Plus side dishes, desserts and tea recipes…

St. Patrick’s Day Recipes and Menus from Teri’s Kitchen - Corned Beef and Cabbage makes an appearance in one menu here, but the rest cover more traditional Irish fare. There’s a bonus in the form of recipes for leftover corned beef and more favorite Irish dishes from visitors.

The real St. Patrick:

The Patron Saint of Ireland was born into either a Scottish or English family in the fourth century. He was captured as a teenager by Niall of the Nine Hostages who was to become a King of all Ireland.

Patrick was later sold into slavery in Ireland and put to work as a shepherd. He worked in terrible conditions for six years drawing comfort in the Christian faith that so many of his people had abandoned under Roman rule.

Patrick had a dream that encouraged him to flee his captivity and to head South where a ship was to be waiting for him. He travelled over 200 miles from his Northern captivity to Wexford town where, sure enough, a ship was waiting to enable his escape.

Upon arrival in England, he was captured by brigands and returned to slavery. He escaped after two months and spent the next seven years travelling Europe seeking his destiny. During this time he furthered his education and studied Christianity in the Lerin Monastery in France.

He returned to England as a priest. Again a dream greatly influenced him when he became convinced that the Irish people were calling out to him to return to the land of his servitude. He went to the Monastery in Auxerre where it was decided that a mission should be sent to Ireland. Patrick was not selected for this task to his great disappointment. The monk that was selected was called Paladius, but he died before he could reach Ireland and a second mission was decided upon.

Patrick was made a Bishop by Pope Celestine in the year 432 and, together with a small band of followers, traveled to Ireland to commence the conversion. Patrick confronted the most powerful man in Ireland Laoghaire, The High King of Tara as he knew that if he could gain his support that he would be safe to spread the word throughout Ireland.

To get his attention Patrick and his followers lit a huge fire to mark the commencement of Spring. Tradition had it that no fire was to be lit until the Kings fire was complete, but Patrick defied this rule and courted the confrontation with the King. The King rushed into action and travelled with the intention of making war on the holy delegation. Patrick calmed the King and with quiet composure impressed the King that he had no other intention than that of spreading the word of the Gospel.

The King accepted the missionary, much to the dismay of the Druids who feared for their own power and position in the face of this new threat. They commanded that he make snow fall. Patrick declined to do so stating that this was Gods work. Immediately it began to snow, only stopping when Patrick blessed himself.

Still trying to convince the King of his religion, Patrick grasped at a shamrock growing on the ground. He explained that there was but one stem on the plant, but three branches of the leaf, representing the Belssed Trinity. The King was impressed with his sincerity and granted him permission to spread the word of his faith, although he did not convert to Christianity himself. Patrick and his followers were free to spread their faith throughout Ireland and did so to great effect. He drove paganism (symbolised by the snake) from the lands of Eireann.

Patrick died on March 17th in the year 461 at the age of 76. It is not known for sure where his remains were laid although Downpatrick in County Down in the North of Ireland is thought to be his final resting place. His influence is still felt to this day as Nations the world over commemorate him on March 17th of every year.
