As we start a new year, 12 teams in the NFL will start a new season. But we got one more week to determine the teams in the playoffs. All six of the AFC teams are locked in. In the NFC, the last playoff spot is up for grabs. In the AFC the Pats are the team to beat, but don’t overlook the Chiefs and the STEELERS, as both are playing their best football of the year. The NFC seems to belong to the Cowboys, but inexperience could be their downfall. If the Packers make the playoffs, they will get a home playoff game, and the Falcons are playing great in the dome. Both of those teams have a veteran presence that can tip the scales when push comes to shove. It’s going to be a fun NFL playoffs to witness, check back for the FANFOOD Playoff Predictions and Playoff Fantasy Football Guide later this week.

2016-17 Pro Bowl will feature a return to the traditional AFC vs. NFC format following three years using a revised, “unconferenced” structure. The Pro Bowl players were determined by the consensus votes of fans, players and coaches. Each group’s vote counted one-third toward determining the 86 Pro Bowl selections. Two additional “need” players will be chosen by each head coach and must be long snappers

The College Football Playoff is back! The new CFP system determines a national champion for the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision. Under the playoff, four teams play in two semifinal games, with the winners advancing to the new College Football Championship Game. The format is simple: the best four teams, two semifinals played in bowl games and a championship game played in a different city each year. It’s the biggest innovation in the sport in decades. The new playoff preserves the excitement and significance of college football’s unique regular season where every game counts. The selection committee chose the four teams for the playoff based on strength of schedule, head-to-head results, comparison of results against common opponents, championships won and other factors.

The 2017 College Football Playoff National Championship will be played at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida on January 9, 2017 between the winners of the Fiesta Bowl and Peach Bowl that will be held on December 31, 2016. It will be the culminating game of the 2016–17 bowl season as the third College Football Playoff National Championship.

This year NHL will have the NHL Centennial Classic (known as the Scotiabank NHL Centennial Classic for sponsorship reasons), an upcoming regular season outdoor National Hockey League (NHL) game that will be held on January 1, 2017. The game will feature the Toronto Maple Leafs taking on the Detroit Red Wings at BMO Field. This will be the first time an NHL outdoor game will be played in Toronto. The next day, The 2017 NHL Winter Classic (officially the 2017 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic) will be played. The game will feature the St. Louis Blues taking on the Chicago Blackhawks at Busch Stadium, home of Major League Baseball’s St. Louis Cardinals. Click Here for FANFOOD Top teams in the NHL along with the NHL on Wednesdays on TV and Full Schedule for The next 31 days. January is also the month that hosts the NHL All-Star Game, The 62nd National Hockey League All-Star Game will be held at Staples Center in Los Angeles, California, home of the Los Angeles Kings on January 29, 2017. This will be the third time Los Angeles will host the NHL All Star Game and first time since 2002. The game will be broadcast on NBC.The 2017 festivities will see the return of the Celebrity Game.

The late-game collapse in the highly-anticipated Finals rematch with the Cavaliers on Christmas proved that this Super Team still has some kinks to work out, but it wasn’t enough to move the Warriors them out of the FANFOOD top spot Click here for the NBA on TV schedule for January ’16, along with the FULL schedule for next month.

A college basketball season breaks down to four quarters. Part one is the pre-conference schedule, where you can evaluate your team and learn more about strengths and weaknesses. The second portion is the conference schedule. Then comes conference tournament time, followed by the Big Dance. Now that we are wrapping up the first phase and most of the non-conference games have been played, there are a number of teams that have feasted early — some with quality wins and others with visits to Cupcake City. Are these teams off to fast starts contenders or pretenders? Click here for EVERY game, by EVERY School, broken down by EVERY week on EVERY TV channel.

NFL Pro Bowl

Sunday, January 29th

The NFL announced the AFC and NFC All-Stars for the 2017 Pro Bowl, which will be played on Sunday, January 29, 2017 and simulcast live on ESPN and ESPN Deportes at 8:00 PM ET from Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida.

The 2017 Pro Bowl will feature a return to the traditional AFC vs. NFC format following three years using a revised, “unconferenced” structure.

The Pro Bowl players were determined by the consensus votes of fans, players and coaches. Each group’s vote counted one-third toward determining the 86 Pro Bowl selections. Two additional “need” players will be chosen by each head coach and must be long snappers. The NFL is the only sports league that combines voting by fans, coaches and players to determine its all-star teams. In 1995, the NFL became the first professional sports league to offer online all-star voting.

Pro Football Hall of Fame running back JEROME BETTIS, All-Pro tight end TONY GONZALEZ, two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year and Super Bowl XXXV MVP RAY LEWIS, and former NFL Defensive Player of the Year and All-Pro defensive back CHARLES WOODSON will serve as 2017 Pro Bowl Legends Captains.

Bettis (offense) and Lewis (defense) will lead the AFC, while Gonzalez (offense) and Woodson (defense) will lead the NFC. During Pro Bowl Week, the four Legends Captains will serve as mentors for the Pro Bowl players, coach practices, and be present on the sidelines on gameday. The NFL legends on both teams will also be assisted by two active player captains.

Twenty-three of the players named to the Pro Bowl today are first-time All-Stars, including three rookies – running back EZEKIEL ELLIOTT and quarterback DAK PRESCOTT of Dallas and return specialist TYREEK HILL of Kansas City.

Twenty-six teams had at least one player selected to the 2017 Pro Bowl and 23 clubs had multiple players chosen as All-Stars. The Oakland Raiders placed a league-best seven players on the Pro Bowl roster, while the Atlanta Falcons led the NFC with six players selected.

The 2017 Pro Bowl coaching staffs will be from the losing teams in the AFC and NFC Divisional playoffs with the best regular-season records.

Under terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, each player on the winning Pro Bowl team receives $61,000, while each player on the losing squad earns $30,000.

Tickets to the 2017 Pro Bowl are on sale through NFL.com/ProBowlOnSale.

This year, the Pro Bowl is more than just a matchup of the NFL’s biggest stars. It’s a week-long celebration that will unite and inspire the entire football community. The 2017 Pro Bowl players and Legends Captains will take part in an unprecedented number of youth activities and community events during Pro Bowl Week in Orlando. Also new this year, the Pro Bowl Skills Showdown, pitting AFC and NFC All-Stars against each other in unique competitions, will air during Pro Bowl Week on Thursday, January 26 at 7:00 PM ET on ESPN.

National Hockey League

The Blue Jackets have rolled to the top of the league on a 13-game winning streak. That’s quite shocking as the franchise that has struggled for relevance ever since it was created has now been the main headline in the NHL on a nightly basis. They’ve excelled on the defensive end as they have allowed just 68 goals so far. That’s in stark contrast to the Penguins, who have allowed 104. No other team in the East has allowed less than 73 – the Washington Capitals – and they’re the only team that’s allowed less than 80.

Overall, the Blue Jackets are second in the NHL in goals allowed and against, along with first on the power play. Can Cam Atkinson, Alexander Wennberg and the rest of the Blue Jackets sustain this ridiculous pace that they’re on? Probably not, but they’re good enough for now and this might net them enough points to make it to the playoffs later in the season and that should be their main goal for the 2016-17 season.

The Stanley Cup champions are leading the league in scoring as they have tallied 129 goals through 37 games. That’s one of the main reasons why they are the No. 1 team in the Eastern Conference with 53 points. Only one other team in the East has more than 50 points.

Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Phil Kessel are all ranking in the top six in terms of scoring. Remember when the Toronto Maple Leafs mocked Kessel? Turns out he’s the real deal and has been for a while now. The Pens 18th in goals allowed, but when you can simply outscore everyone, you can fix your defensive struggles along the way. Marc-Andre Fleury or Matt Murray (who is currently injured) have to get a handle on the #1 spot in goal. However, the Penguins are flourishing right now and if their goalie(s) can keep it together, they should be a big Stanley Cup betting favorite to go back-to-back.

The Blackhawks are always going to hang around the FANFOOD power rankings, and even a recent three-game skid in which they lost all three games by one goal shouldn’t scare you off them. They don’t do anything spectacularly, ranking 13th in goals scored, and seventh in goals and their special teams aren’t great, ranking 16th on the power play and 29th in penalty killing. However, the Blackhawks are a veteran team that will find their way and another run to the Western Conference finals shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone.

Here are the FANFOOD TOP NHL Teams heading into January ’17:

  1. Blue Jackets
  2. Penguins
  3. Blackhawks
  4. Rangers
  5. Canadiens
  6. Wild
  7. Oilers

Announced on March 9, 2016, the game will serve as a celebration of the centennial season of the Maple Leafs, and the beginning of the NHL’s centennial year.[1] It will be one of four outdoor regular season games during the 2016–17 NHL season, the others being the 2016 Heritage Classic, 2017 NHL Winter Classic (which will be held the following day) and the 2017 NHL Stadium Series game.

National Basketball Association

The late-game collapse in the highly-anticipated Finals rematch with the Cavaliers on Christmas proved that this Super Team still has some kinks to work out, but it wasn’t enough to move them out of the FANFOOD top spot. The Warriors still boast the NBA’s best record, rank second in the league in both offensive (113.0 points per 100 possessions) and defensive (100.8 points allowed per 100 possessions) efficiency behind the Raptors and Grizzlies, respectively, and, scary as it may be, have yet to fully gel since Kevin Durant’s addition.

Though their top-to-bottom talent may not be on par with the Warriors, especially with starting shooting guard J.R. Smith expected to miss the next 12-14 weeks with a thumb injury, the Cavaliers still have a bit of a psychological advantage over the NBA’s Golden Boys, as was seen when they overcame a 14-point fourth quarter deficit to save Christmas in Cleveland.

The Spurs, still managing to fly under the radar despite having the second-best record in the NBA, have won 10 of their last 12 games, and at this point, it seems like anything less than a No. 2 seed in the West would be a failure.
Here are the rest of the FANFOON Top 10 NBA Teams as we start the new year.

  1. Golden State Warriors
  2. Cleveland Cavaliers
  3. San Antonio Spurs
  4. Toronto Raptors
  5. Houston Rockets
  6. Los Angeles Clippers

NCAA College Basketball

Part of the winning formula in college basketball is developing upside—as in, having players make breakthroughs that are beyond what their career stats, projected development curves and recruiting evaluations would suggest. We are now past non-conference play so let’s see how some of the players on the FANFOOD Top teams stack up.

Villanova Senior wing Josh Hart was No. 2 in the SI.com preseason Player of the Year forecast based not on an expectation of extreme, offensive excellence but rather all-around value—scoring, rebounding and defense. Hart has since moved up to No. 1 in every pundit’s assessment of the Wooden/Naismith race by playing out of his mind offensively. He’s the nation’s most efficient player (with a 137.8 offensive rating on kenpom.com) that uses at least 25% of his team’s possessions, and he’s averaging nearly as many assists (3.7) as point guard Jalen Brunson (3.8).

UCLA has The Lonzo Ball Effect, which is pushing nearly every Bruin well beyond their expected offensive rating, but freshman forward T.J. Leaf is their real breakthrough star. The baseline expectation for a big man ranked No. 16 in the Recruiting Services Consensus Index (as Leaf was) is along the lines of what Trey Lyles gave Kentucky two seasons ago when it was on its undefeated run—20-plus minutes as a moderately efficient role player. Leaf, however, is producing like a top-five, one-and-done big man, serving as the most efficient scorer (and a productive rebounder) for the nation’s best offense. Even in a loaded freshman class, Leaf was underrated.

Kansas point guard Frank Mason III came into this season with a three-year track record as a valuable—but not high-volume-shooting—piece of the Jayhawks’ offense. In big games as a senior, he’s taken on the clear go-to-guy role and thrived in it, making himself the No. 2 contender in the POY race behind Villanova’s Hart. Mason’s willingness (and ability) to carry KU’s offense in crunch time this season has allowed him to break through from “quality point guard”—which is what our projections viewed him as—to “bonafide star.”

NFL PlayoFF Fantasy

It’s a whole new season and a whole new game. The NFL playoffs are just around the corner, and while your normal fantasy season might be over, the fantasy playoff season has just begun. That’s right, just when you thought you had to close the doors on fantasy football for eight long months, we open up the doors to NFL PlayoFF Fantasy, giving you one last shot at fantasy glory.

You can draft your fantasy football playoff team just like you did back in the summer. However, this time you are limited to the players on the NFL football playoFF rosters. Depending on the settings of your league, the further your players advance, the more points your playoFF fantasy football team scores. Most post-season leagues are total points only leagues, and don’t have head-to-head matchups like a regular season, so you don’t have to worry about having an even number of teams.

Most post-season fantasy football leagues are “contest-style” lineups, where you don’t maintain a roster, but instead, can start any player once, and only once, throughout the NFL playoffs. The winner of the league is simply the franchise with the most total points after the Super Bowl. So, there’s strategy in who you start when. If you think a particular team will lose in the first week of the playoffs, you could start a player on that team in the first playoff week. But, if you think they’ll make it all of the way to the Super Bowl, you could hold off, and not start him until later in the post-season.

One common format is to select or “draft” your roster before the start of the NFL playoffs, and keep the same players throughout. If/when an NFL team is eliminated, any players you have on that team will no longer score points for your fantasy team. So it pays to try to select the players that will play in the most games.

The most flexible style is the “free-for-all” roster format, where you and the rest of your league owners can select any player each week.

The types of NFL playoFF fantasy football games are only limited to the different websites that are hosting them. With some, you have a full set of commissioner capabilities, so you can set up your league any way that you want. Some choose more of a laid back “Pick Em” model, others choose a “Tournament” style where each manager can start a player once (or twice), and others still play a “Draft and Trade” style that mimics regular season fantasy leagues. Bottom Line: You have choices (see links below)

If you are drafting a NFL PlayoFF Fantasy Team, the main goal of the postseason draft is simple – grab the best players on the teams that advance the furthest in the playoffs. Sounds easy right? It’s not a simple as you think, you have to consider the NFL seeding rules, and how teams can be reseeded after each week. As you will read later, Home Field Advantage in the later rounds play an important role on the outcome of games.

Just like in the summer, you need to start by identifying the best players. As always, your league settings dictate who the top players will be. Get familiar with your league and rank accordingly.

For example:

  • Will you have a Live Draft or an Auto-Draft?
  • Will your league be conducting a Snake Draft or a Banzai Draft?
  • What roster requirements are being enforced by your league? Are there position restrictions?
  • What stat categories are being tracked by your league, and at what value?
  • What round multipliers have been set for your league?

Make sure you have the answers to these questions before you even come up with your team name.

Now you need to pick the right players and your strategy. Do you go with players on the highest seeded team? Do you chase stats in the Wildcard? Or do you go with players on your favorite team?

NFL playoFF Fantasy Strategies

The safest approach is to assume that the higher seed will move on to the next round. Just don’t go crazy for all the players on the #1 teams.

Sure you can ride a hot Wild Card team, but this is the hardest (and riskiest) venture to go with, as these teams typically have to play more road games en route to the Super Bowl.

You could stack players on teams with a first-round bye. Now, if you go this route you will (obviously) miss out on fantasy points from Wild Card Weekend. The upside, however, is that you lessen the risk of having your team wiped out early, plus if your league has multipliers you still get the x2 multiplier in the Divisional Round for having these players in your lineup from the get go.

But whatever is your strategy, it is most important that you be sure to check for injuries and postseason eligibility. If you squander your #1 pick or roster spot on a superstar that is injured and out for the post-season, you can wait until next year to collect your fantasy title.

Think about Home Field Advantage as you pick your teams to advance. As you plan for your Fantasy Postseason NFL draft, you should consider the historical advantages for teams that play at home during the playoffs.

Here are the relevant numbers to ponder based on games played over the last 10 years:

  • Regular Season Home Winning %: 57
  • Wild card Round Home Winning %: 57
  • Divisional Round Home Winning %: 60
  • Conference Championship Round Home Winning %: 70

As you can see, there’s nothing special about the first or second round in terms of being different from the regular season. The big difference comes into play during the Conference Championship round where the home team wins 7 out of 10 contests.

There you have it! Now you can enjoy the NFL post-season more than ever before!
