As we start a new year, 12 teams in the NFL will start a new season. But we got one more week to determine the teams in the playoffs. All six of the NFC teams are locked in, but there are still plenty of changes that can occur with the seeding. In the AFC, with the comeback win on Monday, the Broncos clinched a spot, and even put themselves in a good spot to win the AFC West (Denver wins or Kansas City loses). The Steelers are on the outside looking in, and the Colts are technically still eligible to make the postseason, but a lot has to happen. – not likely.

CRIS CARTER and MICHAEL IRVIN – have been selected to serve as alumni captains for the 2015-16 Pro Bowl, and continuing the significantly revised Pro Bowl format that debuted in 2014, Carter and Irvin will have final say over Pro Bowl Draft decisions. The Pro Bowl again will be “unconferenced”, and several key playing rules were changed. Players were selected without regard to conference in voting by fans, coaches and players and later assigned to Pro Bowl teams via a fantasy football-style draft. The Pro Bowl returns to Hawaii’s Aloha Stadium on January 31st at 7:00 pm, and kicks off Super Bowl week, Players will be assigned to teams through the  The Pro Bowl Draft presented by USAA, which will air on Wednesday, January 27 on ESPN2 at 7:30 pm.

The College Football Playoff is back! The new CFP system determines a national champion for the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision. Under the playoff, four teams play in two semifinal games, with the winners advancing to the new College Football Championship Game. The format is simple: the best four teams, two semifinals played in bowl games and a championship game played in a different city each year. It’s the biggest innovation in the sport in decades. The new playoff preserves the excitement and significance of college football’s unique regular season where every game counts. The selection committee chose the four teams for the playoff based on strength of schedule, head-to-head results, comparison of results against common opponents, championships won and other factors.

The 2015 College Football Playoff National Championship will take place on January. 11th at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona at 8:30 p.m and will be aired on ESPN.

This year NHL returns to the Boston Area on New Year’s Day, as the Winter Classic is in Foxborough, MA.  Click Here for FANFOOD Top teams in the NHL along with the NHL on Wednesdays on TV and Full Schedule for The next 31 days. January is also the month that hosts the NHL All-Star Game, but really it’s Nashville that has the honors. This year they are making some interesting changes, we got you covered will all the info.

You might want to just give the NBA Championship trophy to the Warriors the way they are playing, but they still have to play the games. Click here for the NBA on TV schedule for January ’16, along with the FULL schedule for next month.

A college basketball season breaks down to four quarters. Part one is the pre-conference schedule, where you can evaluate your team and learn more about strengths and weaknesses. The second portion is the conference schedule. Then comes conference tournament time, followed by the Big Dance. Now that we are wrapping up the first phase and most of the non-conference games have been played, there are a number of teams that have feasted early — some with quality wins and others with visits to Cupcake City. Are these teams off to fast starts contenders or pretenders? Click here for EVERY game, by EVERY School, broken down by EVERY week on EVERY TV channel.

Get ready for the start of another Grand Slam season as the Australian Open kicks off in Melbourne on Monday, January 18th continuing through to the men’s final on Sunday, January 31st. Click here for the complete match schedule, TV listings and links to the first Grand Slam of 2016.

Finally, your Fantasy Football Season is over, hopefully you won the money, but if you didn’t and feel the need to keep playing, then NFL Playoff Fantasy is there for you. All kinds of games are available from pick’em, to survivor, to classic FF with a playoff pool of players. Anything and everything is out there if you know where to look, and we continue to have your back with information on game styles and strategies to help you pick your players.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

 NFL Playoffs

So here we are with one week to go in the NFL regular season (see above). All six of the NFC teams are locked into the playoffs, but there are still plenty of changes that can occur with the seeding.

Panthers fans want to know what opponent they’re likely to get, and Seahawks fans want to know who they’ll be playing depending on Sunday’s results. In the AFC The Steelers are on the outside looking in, and the Colts are technically still eligible to make the postseason, but a lot has to happen. not likely.

For purposes of playoff matchups, remember the bracket resets after the first round with the lowest seed playing the top seed. So back in the NFC, say hypothetically the Seahawks are the No. 5 seed and beat the Redskins in the first round while the Packers as a No. 3 seed beat the No. 6 seed Vikings. The Panthers would host the Seahawks, while the Cardinals host the Packers.

With the comeback win on Monday, the Broncos clinched a spot. The Broncos put themselves in a good spot to win the AFC West (Denver wins or Kansas City loses). The Broncos can land a first-round bye pretty easily (Denver win). The No. 1 seed is on the table too (Broncos win, Patriots lose). The Bengals need help for a bye (Broncos lose, Bengals win) but are in good shape for the No. 3 seed. The Chiefs need help for an AFC West title (Broncos lose, Chiefs win). A win and the Jets are in. they just need to take care of the mediocre Bills team and the Rex Ryan factor.  If they were to lose and the Steelers win, they are out. The Colts long shot playoff hopes are still alive.

NFL Pro Bowl

January 31st

Aloha Stadium – Honolulu, Hawaii

7:00 PM ET

ESPN

The Pro Bowl returns to Hawaii’s Aloha Stadium on January 31, 2016. It’s Team Rice against Team Irvin. The 2016 Pro Bowl will be televised live on ESPN and again serves as the signature event to kick off Super Bowl week.

The Carolina Panthers placed a league-best 10 players in the 2016 Pro Bowl presented by USAA, which will be played at 7:00 PM ET from Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii. The Pro Bowl players were determined by the consensus votes of fans, players and coaches. Each group’s vote counted one-third toward determining the 86 Pro Bowl selections. Two additional “need” players will be chosen by each head coach and must be long snappers. The NFL is the only sports league that combines voting by fans, coaches and players to determine its all-star teams. In 1995, the NFL became the first professional sports league to offer online all-star voting.

Players will be assigned to teams through the Pro Bowl Draft presented by USAA, which will air on Wednesday, January 27 on ESPN2 (7:30 PM ET). Two Pro Football Hall of Fame wide receivers — Michael Irvin and Jerry Rice — will serve as NFL Legends captains for the 2016 Pro Bowl. Irvin and Rice return for the second time after being the winning captains during the previous two Pro Bowls.

National Hockey League

The Capitals continue to dominate while on a seven-game winning streak. They have earned at least one point in 15 of their last 16 games. Braden Holtby is leading the league with 22 wins and a 1.92 GAA. And as of this writing, he’s 14-0-1 in his last 16 games and the Capitals’ 54 points leads the East. the Capitals are the NHL’s  hottest team, and Holtby’s performance deserves a proper nod. Washington (27-6-2) has won eight in a row and 15 of 17 after Holtby’s 2-0 shutout at Buffalo on Monday night. Holtby (23-4-1), the leading candidate for the Vezina Trophy, has not lost in regulation since Nov. 10

How does first place sound? The Panthers found themselves atop the Atlantic after Sunday’s 3-2 win over the Blue Jackets. The Panthers (44 points) are one point ahead of the Red Wings and Canadiens after a six-game win streak, their longest such streak since 2008. They are 12-3-0 in their last 15 games. After finishing last season as the league’s most-improved team, the Panthers have shaken off a slow start to their 2015-16 campaign and currently sit at #2 in the FANFOOD NHL Top 10.

Every week Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin keep the Stars near the top of the rankings. Benn scored his league-leading 23rd goal of the season in Sunday’s 3-0 victory over the Blues. He also added an assist and now has 49 points in 37 games. The Stars have earned points in their last five games, going 4-0-1. Patrick Sharp has eight points (three goals and five assists) in his last five games. The Dallas Stars get a lot of attention for their goal scoring, and that’s no surprise. They lead the NHL in that department, averaging 3.46 goals per game. But the Stars are starting to get pretty good at keeping pucks out of their net as well.

Through Sunday’s games, the Stars were tied for ninth in the NHL in goals against at 2.41 per game. That’s a big step forward for a team that ranked 26th in the league last season in goals against, allowing 3.13 per game. And the Stars have been on a pretty good run lately. They’ve allowed just seven goals during their current five-game point streak (1.40 per game), and they’ve allowed 15 goals over the past nine games (1.67 per game). This is why they round out the FANFOOD Top 10.

Here are the FANFOOD Top 10 NHL Teams as we begin a new year:

  1. Washington
  2. Florida
  3. Dallas
  4. Detroit
  5. St. Louis
  6. Chicago
  7. Los Angeles
  8. Tampa Bay
  9. Ottawa
  10. Carolina

NHL Winter Classic

On New Year’s Day, the Boston Bruins will play host to the Montreal Canadiens in the 2016 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass. When these long-time rivals meet, Boston will become the first club to host the Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic for a second time, after defeating the Philadelphia Flyers, 2-1, in overtime at the 2010 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic at Fenway Park. It will mark the first time the Canadiens will play in the Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic, and just the second time a Canadian-based NHL team will play in the event, following Toronto’s appearance in 2014.

The event will be broadcast live nationally on NBC at 1 p.m. ET.

Montreal-based band Simple Plan has been added to the musical lineup for the event. The band will perform the Canadian national anthem and return to the stage during the second intermission for a set. Boasting worldwide sales topping 10 million, the band’s Get Your Heart On! album spawned international hits with “Jetlag” and “Summer Paradise.” The band’s current single, “I Don’t Wanna Go To Bed,” featuring Nelly is racing up the global charts. Their fifth album, Taking One For The Team, is slated for a Feb. 19 worldwide release.
The anthem ceremony also will feature “The Voice” season 9 winner and recording artist Jordan Smith’s rendition of the U.S. national anthem with accompaniment from musicians from the Boston Pops; a color guard made up of members of each of the five military branches; and Greater Boston Junior Bruins youth hockey players serving as flag bearers.
Immediately following the U.S. and Canadian anthems, pilots from the 143rd Airlift Squadron of the Rhode Island Air National Guard will fly a single C-130J plane over Gillette Stadium to celebrate the start of the 2016 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic®.

As previously announced, alternative rock band American Authors and singer/songwriter Nate Ruess will give pre-game and first intermission performances, respectively.
Bridgestone and the NHL will welcome members from the Boys and Girls Clubs of Boston. Across America, Bridgestone and the Boys and Girls Clubs have teamed up to enable young people to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens. In the Boston area, the Boys and Girls Clubs serve more than 16,000 youth through 11 different clubs annually.

NHL Network™ and NHL.com will provide extensive coverage live from the 2016 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic®. NHL Social™ will have exclusive coverage on all social platforms, via the hashtag #WinterClassic. For the latest on the NHL Winter Classic®, visit NHL.com, follow the NHL on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram and join the conversation by using the official hashtag #WinterClassic.

NHL All-Star Game

The 2016 NHL All-Star Game takes place Jan. 31 in Nashville. The NHL All-Star Game will be switching formats this year, the new format features a three-on-three tournament with four teams, one from each division. Dead and gone is the fantasy draft, replaced by the division-divided 3v3 tournament.

The new format will divide the All-Star Game into three 20-minute games, with star players from each Division making up the four All-Star teams: Pacific, Central, Atlantic, and Metropolitan. The 2016 Honda NHL All-Star celebration will include the 2016 Honda NHL All-Star Skills Competition™ on Saturday, Jan. 30, and the 2016 Honda NHL All-Star Tournament on Sunday, Jan. 31, where players will face off in a winner-take-all $1 million inter-division tournament.

Each team will be made up of 11 players: six forwards, three defensemen and two goaltenders.

The 2016 NHL All-Star Fan Vote will allow fans to vote for one All-Star player from each Division, without regard to position. The top vote-getter from each Division will be named NHL All-Stars, as well as Captain of his respective team.

The remaining 40 NHL All-Stars will be named by the NHL Hockey Operations Department for a total of 44 All-Star players, with at least one player selected from each NHL team.

The 2016 Honda All-Star Skills Competition™ returns to a matchup between the Eastern Conference and Western Conference All-Stars on Saturday evening, with the winning conference earning the right to select when their semi-final matchup will be played; first or second on Sunday.

  • Each game in the three-game, 3-on-3 2016 Honda NHL All-Star Tournament will be 20 minutes in length.
  • Teams will change ends at the 10-minute mark of each game. Games that are tied after 20 minutes will be decided by a shootout.
  • The Central Division All-Stars will face the Pacific Division All-Stars and the Atlantic Division All-Stars will face the Metropolitan Division All-Stars in the two Semi-Final games.
  • The winners of each Semi-Final game will play each other in the All-Star Game Final to determine the overall tournament champion.
  • The four division-leading NHL coaches (best points percentage following the completion of games on Jan. 9, 2016) will be named coaches for each of the four All-Star teams

A new look to the NHL All-Star Weekend festivities is not unprecedented, as a number of new formats and innovative changes have been introduced and incorporated over the years. In 1947, the first official NHL All-Star Game called for the defending Stanley Cup Champions to play against a selection of All-Stars from the other teams. Over the course of 60 NHL All-Star Games, the format has changed to pit First Team All-Stars vs. Second Team All-Stars; East Division vs. West Division; Campbell Conference vs. Wales Conference; Eastern Conference vs. Western Conference; North America vs. the World; and most recently, a player Fantasy Draft, where All-Star players themselves determined the composition of each team.

The 2016 Honda NHL All-Star celebration will mark the first time Nashville has hosted the NHL All-Star weekend, which will take place at Bridgestone Arena. Live television coverage of the League’s mid-season showcase during the Honda NHL All-Star Skills Competition™ and Honda NHL All-Star Tournament will be broadcast by NBCSN in the U.S. and Sportsnet and TVA Sports in Canada. The Honda NHL All-Star Skills Competition™ will begin at 7 p.m. ET on Saturday, Jan. 30 and the 2016 Honda NHL All-Star Tournament will start at 5 p.m. ET on Sunday, Jan. 31.

National Basketball Association

The undisputed Top Team in the NBA, the Warriors, have a 62.3 percent chance to win 70 games and 33.4 percent likely to match the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls’ all-time best 72 wins. If they just match their 67 win season of a year ago, the Warriors will join the Michael Jordan Bulls (1995-96 and 1996-97 editions) as the only teams in league history to win 65-plus games in consecutive seasons. Now look: Steph Curry’s Warriors only need a pedestrian 39-14 finish over their final 53 games to pull that off.

The also ran, Spurs have a player named Tim Duncan, who has played 1,360 regular-season games and sports a record of 974-386 … 588 games above .500 And that happens to be equal with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (1,074-486) for the most games over .500 in NBA history.

Rounding out the FANFOOD NBA Top 3, is OKC. For the Season, the Thunder is just 6-8 against the East and wasted a second straight 25+ points, 5+ rebounds, 5+ assists, 5+ steals Christmas performance from Russell Westbrook. The consolation, They are 10-2 in its last 12 games and has outscored opponents by 12.7 PPG in that span.

Here are the FANFOOD NBA Top 10 heading into 2016:

  1. Golden State
  2. San Antonio
  3. Oklahoma City
  4. Cleveland
  5. Toronto
  6. Atlanta
  7. Boston

NCAA MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Conference play is set to begin around the country as all Division I teams begin their move toward one of 68 spots in the 2016 NCAA Tournament. Nationally, the focus will be on the major conferences. Four Associated Press Top 25 teams – Xavier, Villanova, Providence and Butler – with no loss among them outside of the Top 25, will go head to head in Big East openers Thursday. No. 6 Xavier is at No. 16 Villanova and No. 9 Butler hosts No. 12 Providence. Then on Saturday, Xavier is home to Butler. If Xavier remains undefeated after this week there will be little doubt the Musketeers are a team to be feared well into March Madness.

Perhaps only the Big 12, where five teams populate the AP Top 25 and a sixth is getting votes, will be a tougher title to win.

Another conference to watch is the SEC. Kentucky (10-2) looks very vulnerable, meaning road losses in league play should not come as a surprise.

South Carolina (11-0), Florida (8-3), Texas A&M (9-3) and perhaps another wildcard team such as LSU (7-4) could all be trouble on the road for Kentucky, which has a major problem with its tepid 3-point shooting (31.7 percent). Also, the Wildcats can ill-afford any kind of major injury.

Meanwhile, the Horizon League and the Mid-American Conference, traditional one-bid leagues, will be just as competitive with the hope one team can get hot and perhaps get that second coveted NCAA Tournament berth.

AUSTRALIAN OPEN

The world’s top 99 men and 99 of the top 100 women will descend on Melbourne Park in January for Australian Open 2016.

World No.1s Serena Williams (USA) and Novak Djokovic (SRB) will lead the all-star player field, with retiring world No.8 Flavia Pennetta (ITA) the only name missing from the women’s top 100 and current world No.100 Dudi Sela (ISR) just missing the men’s direct entry cut-off.

Australian Open Tournament Director Craig Tiley said fans could expect two weeks of world class tennis when the event gets under way on Monday 18 January. “The field for Australian Open 2016 is looking stronger than ever and with little more than a month until the tournament begins, our preparations are in full swing,” Tiley said.

“We’re looking forward to former world No.2 Tommy Haas (GER) returning to the tournament after being sidelined by a shoulder injury for most of 2014 and the first half of this year.” Also returning from injury on protected rankings are Julien Benneteau (FRA), Janko Tipsarevic (SRB), Brian Baker (USA) and Dmitry Tursunov (RUS) in the men’s draw, and Petra Cetkovska (CZE), Galina Voskoboeva (KAZ), Vania King (USA), Alisa Kleybanova (RUS) and Victoria Duval (USA) in the women’s draw. Australia’s Casey Dellacqua has officially withdrawn from the Australian Open due to post-concussion syndrome following an on-court fall this year.

“Casey is such an integral member of our tennis family and a fan favorite, especially when playing here at home. We wish her the very best for a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing her back on court soon,” Tiley said.

There will be 16 male qualifiers and 12 female qualifiers added to each draw along with eight wildcards.

Main draw women’s wildcards will be awarded as follows: Tammi Patterson (Australian Pro Tour), Han Xinyun (CHN, Asia-Pacific Wildcard Play-off), Samantha Crawford (USA, US Open reciprocal), Australian Open 2016 Play-off winner, 18/u Australian Championships winner, Roland Garros reciprocal and two discretionary wildcards TBC.

Main draw men’s wildcards will be awarded as follows: Lleyton Hewitt (discretionary), Yoshihito Nishioka (JPN, Asia-Pacific Wildcard Play-off), Noah Rubin (USA, US Open reciprocal), Roland Garros reciprocal, Australian Open 2016 Play-off winner and three discretionary wildcards TBC.

The 2016 Australian Open will take place at Melbourne Park from January 18th to the 31st. It will be the 104th edition of the Australian Open, and the first Grand Slam tournament of the year. The tournament will consist of events for professional players in singles, doubles and mixed doubles play. Junior and wheelchair players competed in singles and doubles tournaments.

Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams are the respective defending champions in the men’s and women’s singles.

NFL PlayoFF Fantasy

It’s a whole new season and a whole new game. The NFL playoffs are just around the corner, and while your normal fantasy season might be over, the fantasy playoff season has just begun. That’s right, just when you thought you had to close the doors on fantasy football for eight long months, we open up the doors to NFL PlayoFF Fantasy, giving you one last shot at fantasy glory.

You can draft your fantasy football playoff team just like you did back in the summer. However, this time you are limited to the players on the NFL football playoFF rosters. Depending on the settings of your league, the further your players advance, the more points your playoFF fantasy football team scores. Most post-season leagues are total points only leagues, and don’t have head-to-head matchups like a regular season, so you don’t have to worry about having an even number of teams.

Most post-season fantasy football leagues are “contest-style” lineups, where you don’t maintain a roster, but instead, can start any player once, and only once, throughout the NFL playoffs. The winner of the league is simply the franchise with the most total points after the Super Bowl. So, there’s strategy in who you start when. If you think a particular team will lose in the first week of the playoffs, you could start a player on that team in the first playoff week. But, if you think they’ll make it all of the way to the Super Bowl, you could hold off, and not start him until later in the post-season.

One common format is to select or “draft” your roster before the start of the NFL playoffs, and keep the same players throughout. If/when an NFL team is eliminated, any players you have on that team will no longer score points for your fantasy team. So it pays to try to select the players that will play in the most games.

The most flexible style is the “free-for-all” roster format, where you and the rest of your league owners can select any player each week.

The types of NFL playoFF fantasy football games are only limited to the different websites that are hosting them. With some, you have a full set of commissioner capabilities, so you can set up your league any way that you want. Some choose more of a laid back “Pick Em” model, others choose a “Tournament” style where each manager can start a player once (or twice), and others still play a “Draft and Trade” style that mimics regular season fantasy leagues. Bottom Line: You have choices (see links below)

If you are drafting a NFL PlayoFF Fantasy Team, the main goal of the postseason draft is simple – grab the best players on the teams that advance the furthest in the playoffs. Sounds easy right? It’s not a simple as you think, you have to consider the NFL seeding rules, and how teams can be reseeded after each week. As you will read later, Home Field Advantage in the later rounds play an important role on the outcome of games.

Just like in the summer, you need to start by identifying the best players. As always, your league settings dictate who the top players will be. Get familiar with your league and rank accordingly.

For example:

  • Will you have a Live Draft or an Auto-Draft?
  • Will your league be conducting a Snake Draft or a Banzai Draft?
  • What roster requirements are being enforced by your league? Are there position restrictions?
  • What stat categories are being tracked by your league, and at what value?
  • What round multipliers have been set for your league?

Make sure you have the answers to these questions before you even come up with your team name.

Now you need to pick the right players and your strategy. Do you go with players on the highest seeded team? Do you chase stats in the Wildcard? Or do you go with players on your favorite team?

NFL playoFF Fantasy Strategies

The safest approach is to assume that the higher seed will move on to the next round. Just don’t go crazy for all the players on the #1 teams.

Sure you can ride a hot Wild Card team, but this is the hardest (and riskiest) venture to go with, as these teams typically have to play more road games en route to the Super Bowl.

You could stack players on teams with a first-round bye. Now, if you go this route you will (obviously) miss out on fantasy points from Wild Card Weekend. The upside, however, is that you lessen the risk of having your team wiped out early, plus if your league has multipliers you still get the x2 multiplier in the Divisional Round for having these players in your lineup from the get go.

But whatever is your strategy, it is most important that you be sure to check for injuries and postseason eligibility. If you squander your #1 pick or roster spot on a superstar that is injured and out for the post-season, you can wait until next year to collect your fantasy title.

Think about Home Field Advantage as you pick your teams to advance. As you plan for your Fantasy Postseason NFL draft, you should consider the historical advantages for teams that play at home during the playoffs.

Here are the relevant numbers to ponder based on games played over the last 10 years:

  • Regular Season Home Winning %: 57
  • Wild card Round Home Winning %: 57
  • Divisional Round Home Winning %: 60
  • Conference Championship Round Home Winning %: 70

As you can see, there’s nothing special about the first or second round in terms of being different from the regular season. The big difference comes into play during the Conference Championship round where the home team wins 7 out of 10 contests.

There you have it! Now you can enjoy the NFL post-season more than ever before!
