As we start a new year, 12 teams in the NFL start a new season. The playoffs get underway and as expected, the road to the Super Bowl in the NFC goes through No. 1 seed Seattle, where the crowd is crazy and the defense is even crazier. In the AFC the road to Super Bowl XLIX goes through New England as the Patriots wrapped up home field advantage of their own. The Wild Card Weekend is this weekend and we got you covered with the complete NFL Playoff Schedule along with our picks.

Speaking of making picks two Pro Football Hall of Fame wide receivers – CRIS CARTER and MICHAEL IRVIN – have been selected to serve as alumni captains for the 2015 Pro Bowl, and continuing the significantly revised Pro Bowl format that debuted with the 2014 Pro Bowl, Carter and Irvin will have final say over Pro Bowl Draft decisions. Last season, the Pro Bowl was “unconferenced” for the first time, and several key playing rules were changed. Players were selected without regard to conference in voting by fans, coaches and players and later assigned to Pro Bowl teams via a fantasy football-style draft. The 2015 Pro Bowl, presented by McDonald’s, will be played on Sunday, January 25, 2015 and televised live on ESPN at 8:00 PM ET from University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, the site of Super Bowl XLIX a week later on Sunday, February 1. The 2015 Pro Bowl Draft will be held on January 20-21 and broadcast in primetime on NFL Network.

The College Football Playoff is here! Finally. The new CFP system will determine a national champion for the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision. Under the playoff, four teams play in two semifinal games, with the winners advancing to the new College Football Championship Game. The format is simple: the best four teams, two semifinals played in bowl games and a championship game played in a different city each year. It’s the biggest innovation in the sport in decades. The new playoff preserves the excitement and significance of college football’s unique regular season where every game counts. The selection committee chose the four teams for the playoff based on strength of schedule, head-to-head results, comparison of results against common opponents, championships won and other factors.

The No. 2 CFP-ranked Oregon Ducks, champions of the Pac-12 Conference, and the No. 3 CFP-ranked Florida State Seminoles, champions of the ACC Conference, have earned berths to play in the College Football Playoff Semifinal at the Rose Bowl Game presented by Northwestern Mutual at 1:30 p.m. PT (4:30 p.m. ET), Thursday, January 1, 2015, at the Rose Bowl Stadium.

Ohio State is coached by Urban Meyer and is a member of the Big 10. The first football team was fielded in 1890. The Buckeyes are 7-time National Champions. They are going against they #1 team in the country, Alabama, coached by Nick Saban and is a member of the SEC. The first football team was fielded in 1892. The Crimson Tide are 15-time National Champions. The Sugar Bowl game will be played later in the day on January 1st – 8:30 p.m. ET.

The 2015 College Football Playoff National Championship will take place on January 12, 2015 in North Texas. The game will be held at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, with kickoff taking place at 7:30 p.m. CT. The game will be broadcast by ESPN. We got you covered for the big game, with Ticket, Event, GameDay and Media Information.

NFL Pro-Bowl

Two Pro Football Hall of Fame wide receivers – CRIS CARTER and MICHAEL IRVIN – have been selected to serve as alumni captains for the 2015 Pro Bowl.

Continuing the significantly revised Pro Bowl format that debuted with the 2014 Pro Bowl, Carter and Irvin will have final say over Pro Bowl Draft decisions. Each legend will be assisted in the Draft process by two active player captains and one NFL.com fantasy football champion, who will earn their spot as part of Lenovo’s Fantasy Coach of the Year platform.
“Being voted to the Pro Bowl was always a tremendous honor for me,” says Carter, who now serves as an NFL studio analyst for ESPN. “Last year, players really seemed to be excited about the new rules and the Pro Bowl Draft format. I’m excited to be a part of it this year.”

“Some of my favorite NFL memories were from my Pro Bowl trips,” says Irvin, who currently serves as an analyst for NFL Network. “I can’t wait to see which players get the Pro Bowl nod this season. I’m already thinking about how to build my team.”

Last season, the Pro Bowl was “unconferenced” for the first time, and several key playing rules were changed. Players were selected without regard to conference in voting by fans, coaches and players and later assigned to Pro Bowl teams via a fantasy football-style draft. Pro Football Hall of Famers JERRY RICE and DEION SANDERS served as alumni captains, as Team Rice defeated Team Sanders 22-21 at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii.

The Arizona Cardinals and Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee will host the Pro Bowl and surrounding activities.

The 2015 Pro Bowl Draft will be held on January 20-21 and broadcast in primetime on NFL Network.

An eight-time Pro Bowl selection and standout wide receiver for the Philadelphia Eagles, Minnesota Vikings and Miami Dolphins, Carter was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2013. Carter, who ranks fourth in NFL history in receptions (1,101) and touchdown catches (130), recorded eight straight 1,000-yard receiving seasons (1993-2000).

A member of the 2007 Pro Football Hall of Fame class, Irvin was a five-time Pro Bowl selection and three-time Super Bowl champion (XXVII, XXVIII and XXX) during his 12-year career with the Dallas Cowboys. Irvin still ranks as the Cowboys’ all-time leader in receiving yards (11,904).

Carter and Irvin were both named to the NFL’s All-Decade Team of the 1990s.

Watched by 11.4 million viewers in 2014, the Pro Bowl has been the most-watched All-Star game in all of sports the past four years.

Game Format

  • Two former players will draft players on to the teams. Each will be assisted by two player captains and one NFL.com fantasy football champion.
  • A two-minute warning will be added to the first and third quarters, plus overtime, and the ball will switch hands after every quarter/overtime.
  • No kickoffs. A coin toss will determine which team is awarded possession first, and the ball will be placed on the 25-yard line at the start of each quarter and after scoring plays.
  • The rosters now consist of 44 players per squad, with an additional defensive back added.
  • The defense is now permitted to play “cover two” and “press” coverage. In the previous years, only the “man” coverage was permitted, except for goal line situations.
  • Beginning at the two-minute mark of every quarter/overtime, if the offense does not gain at least one yard, the clock stops as if the play were an incomplete pass.
  • A 35-second and 25-second play clock is used instead of the usual 40-second and 25-second clock.
  • The game clock does not stop on quarterback sacks outside of the final 2 minutes of regulation.

College Football Playoff

College football has entered a new four-team playoff era. The new postseason structure creates an exciting four-team playoff that preserves the best regular season in sports and protects America’s rich bowl tradition. It does not go too far; it goes just the right distance and respects the academic calendar while limiting the number of games played by student-athletes. Fans will enjoy back-to-back triple headers. Two semifinals and four other premier bowl games will be played on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. Those holidays will belong to college football. Semifinal games will rotate among six different bowls, extending the experience to more fans.

Rose Bowl

Known as the oldest of bowls, the Rose Bowl Game kicked off a myriad of college football legacies in 1902. Since then, the game has been home to 17 Heisman Trophy winners, produced 29 national champions, featured 203 consensus All-Americans and honored 110 college football legends by inducting them into the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame.

The exclusive agreement among the Tournament of Roses Association, the Big Ten Conference and the Pac-12 Conference was born in 1946, and the first game played under the agreement took place on January 1, 1947. The pact is the oldest intercollegiate postseason bowl agreement between two major conferences in the United States.

The 101st Rose Bowl Game will be a College Football Playoff semifinal game which will be held on January 1, 2015 at the Rose Bowl Stadium. This game will match two top teams as selected by the College Football Playoff Selection Committee to compete for a spot in the College Football Playoff Championship to be played on January 12, 2015 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, TX.

For more information on the Rose Bowl Game, please visit www.tournamentofroses.com.

Sugar Bowl

The Allstate Sugar Bowl has established itself as one of the premier bowl games in the country, having hosted 23 national champions, 86 Hall of Fame players, 46 Hall of Fame coaches and 15 Heisman Trophy winners in its 80-year history. The Bowl will host one of the first semifinal games in the new College Football Playoff postseason format on January 1, 2015. In addition to 2015, the Allstate Sugar Bowl will host semifinal games in 2018, 2021 and 2024.

In addition to football, the Sugar Bowl Committee is involved with various community initiatives through hosting and sponsorships of sporting events, awards and clinics. Through these efforts, the organization supports and honors over 13,000 student-athletes each year, while injecting over $2 billion into the local economy in the last decade.

The Sugar Bowl is dedicated to “Preserving the Past and Ensuring the Future.”

NHL Winter Classic

The 2015 NHL Winter Classic is a regular season outdoor NHL game, and will be held January 1, 2015. The game, the seventh Winter Classic, will feature the Chicago Blackhawks and the Washington Capitals at Nationals Park.

The transformation began Dec. 15 when the National Hockey League cooled the baseball field with a refrigeration truck, changing the Nats’ ballpark to the temporary home of the Washington Capitals, which plays the Chicago Blackhawks in the Classic game.

The entire transformation usually takes 10 to 15 days; in years past, the NHL had to make the switchover happen in as few as five days.

NHL officials are keeping an eye on the weather.

Spokesman Jamey Horan described the perfect environment for an outdoor hockey game as, “something along the lines of an overcast day so the sun isn’t a factor,” he says. “Thirties, forties are fine so the crowd is comfortable but feels like winter.”

Horan also noted that the sun goes by Nationals Park rather early in the day, so that will reduce the impact it will have on the ice. However, there is a chance for rain a couple of days leading into Thursday.

“I’m not a physics expert, but what I’ve learned from our ice making crew is that they turn the rain into ice,” explained Horan.

The rink has a refrigeration floor set to 22 degrees, which keeps the ice frozen. Any water that contacts it will freeze, unless it is a very heavy rain.

The game has already sold out, but some third-party ticket sites have standing room only tickets on sale for at least $200.

National Basketball Association

The door was opened by an empty two-game trip to Hollywood for the Golden State Warriors. And an Eastern Conference team, believe it or not, has taken advantage. The Chicago Bulls have unexpectedly risen to the top of the FANFOOD Top 10 as we head into 2015, riding their league-high-tying 13 road wins and an overall surge of 9-1 to jump six spots and bump the Warriors off the top spot. The Dubs are a tidy 18-2 with Andrew Bogut healthy but have finally tumbled out of the top spot thanks largely to a bad loss to the Kobe-less Lakers without him. The good news? Golden State is just one game into a six-game homestand after playing 17 of its first 28 games on the road. Remember when Damian Lillard supposedly started the season in a funk? We can’t, either. Lillard suddenly leads the league in scoring in the fourth quarter and overtime with an average of 7.4 points, which has helped hike Portland to a robust plus-9 when you subtract home losses from road wins. That’s your top 3, and here is the rest of the FANFOOD Top 10 NBA teams heading into January.

  2. Golden State
  3. Portland
  4. Atlanta
  5. Toronto

NCAA Men’s Basketball

We’ve reached the start of a new calendar year, which means conference play is upon us. The race for national player of the year remains wide open heading into the new year, but it’s tough to imagine anyone toppling one big man for freshman of the year honors.

There are really only two ways to get noticed in the early part of the season — via the goofy and the great.

Fortunately the early part of the college hoops season has offered equal parts of both. We have seen the ridiculous (Incarnate Word, NJIT) and the sublime (Kentucky and Duke); the silly (how about George Washington coach Mike Lonegran dancing in a grass skirt?) and the superb (St. John’s Chris Obekpa trying to bring back the short shorts).

Now that the oft-ignored but still critical nonconference season is coming to a close, lets take a look at our top 10.

Here are the FANFOOD Top 10 NCAA Men’s Basketball Teams heading into January, followed by the FULL Schedule for the first month of 2015:

Australian Open

Get ready for the start of another Grand Slam season as the Australian Open kicks off in Melbourne.

The 2015 Australian Open will be played on the outdoor hard courts at the Melbourne Park in Melbourne, Australia. It will be played from January 19 to February 1, and will feature men’s and women’s events in singles and doubles, as well as mixed doubles. The tournament will also feature junior, senior, and wheelchair events.

The 2015 Australian Open will be the 103rd edition of the tournament.

The tournament will be run by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and will be part of the 2015 ATP World Tour and the 2015 WTA Tour calendars under the Grand Slam category. The tournament consists of both men’s and women’s singles and doubles draws as well as a mixed doubles event. There will be singles and doubles events for both boys and girls (players under 18), which is part of the Grade A category of tournaments, and also singles, doubles and quad events for men’s and women’s wheelchair tennis players as part of the NEC tour under the Grand Slam category.

The tournament will be played on hard courts and will take place over a series of 16 courts with Plexicushion surface, including the three main showcourts – Rod Laver Arena, Hisense Arena and Margaret Court Arena. The latter will be unveiled as the third Melbourne Park venue with fully operational retrectable roof to make the Australian Open the first Grand Slam tournament with three such tennis stadiums.

NFL PLAYOFF FANTASY FOOTBALL 101

The fantasy football season has concluded, but fantasy football lives on with postseason leagues.

Playoff leagues can be a lot of fun, and they are completely different than regular-season fantasy football. The key difference is that predicting game outcomes is perhaps the key factor in your success. In most situations, you’d rather have your player advance than have a big game and lose. That’s because once your player’s team is finished, so is the player. That means no more points and a big old dead spot in your lineup. For this reason, it is important to project the number of games each team will play.

You never get a second chance to make a first impression … unless we’re talking about fantasy football. In this realm, sweet redemption comes in the form of dominating the NFL postseason league of your choice. Before you blindly accept the scoring rules, terms of competition and entry fees of any random league, here are the fundamental and strategic differences of standard postseason (or “longevity”) leagues and weekly one-and-done (or “survivor”) leagues.
