HIT the LINKS: Alltop

Throughout my many years playing this game, I have come across a bunch of websites that specialize in fantasy sports. I saved them all and they are included in the

FANFOOD Fantasy Baseball Tools

and the

FANFOOD Fantasy Football Tools

Each week a different website, twitter feed or mobile application will be highlighted and reviewed for you before you “HIT the LINKS”.

This week I ask you to check out Alltop.com, along with a great recipe for Beer Cheese Spread.

The purpose of Alltop is to help you answer the question, “What’s happening?” in “all the topics” that interest you. You may wonder how Alltop is different from a search engine. A search engine is good to answer a question like, “How many people live in China?” However, it has a much harder time answering the question, “What’s happening in China?” That’s the kind of question that they answer.

They do this by collecting the headlines of the latest stories from the best sites and blogs that cover a topic. They group these collections — “aggregations” — into individual web pages. Then they display the five most recent headlines of the information sources as well as their first paragraph. Their topics run from adoption to zoology with photography, food, science, religion, celebrities, fashion, gaming, sports, politics, automobiles, Macintosh, and hundreds of other subjects along the way.

You can think of Alltop as the “online magazine rack” of the web. They have subscribed to thousands of sources to provide “aggregation without aggravation.” To be clear, Alltop pages are starting points—they are not destinations per se. Ultimately, their goal is to enhance your online reading by displaying stories from sources that you’re already visiting plus helping you discover sources that you didn’t know existed.

Nononina is the company that owns Alltop. It is “two guys and a gal” in a garage—or more accurately, one guy in home office (Will Mayall), one gal on a kitchen table (Kathryn Henkens), and one Guy in United 2B (Guy Kawasaki). They’ve been working together since the previous century and are still friends.

Beer Cheese Spread

1/2 pound Vermont white cheddar cheese finely shredded
1/2 pound Swiss cheese finely shredded
2 (or more if you love garlic) cloves of garlic minced
1/2 teaspoon dry mustard
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
A little over a half cup of your favorite brew

A food processor works best, or use an electric mixer to combine all of the ingredients except the beer.
When the cheese is smooth and mixed thoroughly, add the beer gradually until blended.
Chill for several hours before serving.
