Ahh February…It’s that short month after all the holidays, nothing to see here right?

Not this year!

February in 2014 is jam packed with sports. Kicking off the month is Super Bowl XLVIII in NJ/NY with a great matchup between the Seattle Seahawks and the Denver Broncos. It will be a great game as the best defensive team in the league (Seattle) squares off with the most explosive offensive unit (Denver), this is the ultimate example of the immovable object meeting the unstoppable force.  And the best part is, you don’t have to be home in front of your TV or freezing your butt off in East Rutherford to view it. Now you can take the action with you wherever you’re going. FOX Sports will provide live streaming video of the big game, via their FOX Sports GO app. But of course the game is just a game, there are much more to it, like all the commercials, prop bets and party recipes.

Not to be outshined, the  2014 Winter Olympics, officially the XXII Olympic Winter Games, or the 22nd Winter Olympics, will take place from February 6th to the 23rd in Sochi, Russia. 98 events in 15 winter sport disciplines will be held. The Sochi Olympics will be the first Olympics in the Russian Federation since the breakup of the USSR. We’ve got you covered with everything you need to know from full day-by-day Sochi competition schedule and the complete Sochi Olympics TV listings.

Some of my favorite 4 word phrases are “pitchers and catchers report!” Major League Baseball Spring training is right around the corner and we have all the important February dates for you to know, such as the workout schedule for all 30 teams and complete schedule for the exhibition games in the month.

The NHL takes a much needed break in the month as many professional players participate in the Olympics for their respective countries. Click here for the full schedule for the month along with a Sochi Olympic hockey preview of the top teams headed to Russia.

Speaking of taking a break, the pro ballers take a few days off in the middle of February and the best of the best play a game of hoops in New Orleans.  The 63rd edition of the NBA All-Star Game will be played on February 16, 2014 at New Orleans Arena. Festivities surround the big game get underway on Valentine’s Day night, February 14 when the NBA Rising Stars Challenge puts the spotlight on ‘star’ NBA rookies, followed by the highly popular NBA All-Star Saturday night with the Slam Dunk Contest – February 15. Click here for some video of memorable moments of guys slamming a ball threw a cylinder. We also got you covered with every NBA game on TV and the full schedule for the month.

The college kids don’t take a break, as they are gearing up for the Madness of March. February marks signals the end of the college basketball season and when the calendar flips, it’s time for the conference tournaments, the national championship tournament and the return of the made up word, bracketology. But lets not get ahead of ourselves. Click here for the entire schedule for every game in College Basketball broken down by week.

If Auto Racing is your thing, the Super Bowl of stock car racing is coming up this month. What better way in the dead of winter to warm up than to start planning that trip to Daytona and the annual Speedweeks festival of racing. The highlight of the month is the 56th Daytona 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race on Feb. 23rd. There will also be racing in the NASCAR Nationwide Series, NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, NASCAR K&N Pro Series-East, and the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour. Got all that? Good. Click here for the complete schedule of the Speedweeks at Daytona International Speedway, and links to the big race in FLA.

Last and most likely least, we have links to all the professional tennis tournaments held in the next 28 days, and links to the tournaments where grown men hit a little white ball around a field in hopes to put it in a hole in less shots than the other guys in slacks.

Super Bowl XLVIII

Sunday, Feb. 2, at 6:25 p.m. ET on

The NFL championship is one of the most anticipated sporting events of the calendar year, and 2014′s Super Bowl XLVIII featuring the Seattle Seahawks and the Denver Broncos will be one of the most memorable title games in history. With the best defensive team in the league (Seattle) squaring off with the most explosive offensive unit (Denver), this is the ultimate example of the immovable object meeting the unstoppable force.

This will be a fierce battle.

Can’t be in front of the TV for the Super Bowl. Now you can take the action with you wherever you’re going. FOX Sports will provide live streaming video of the big game, via their FOX Sports GO app. Head over to the FOX Sports GO site for more information. Nearly one-third of U.S. adults are likely to bet on the big game with men outnumbering women who decide to put some cash on the line.  As of this posting, the Denver Broncos are favored by 2.5 points for Super Bowl 48 with an over/under of 27.5 total points.  But those are the boring bets.

A proposition bet, also known as a prop bet or a side bet, can be made two ways: on the occurrence (or not) during a game and on specific aspects of the pageantry surrounding the game. After odds for everything from who will be the MVP of the game, to what team will score first. Novelty props include the length of the national anthem to bets on what color gatorade will be dumped on the coach. You can bet on anything from whether or not the national anthem will run longer than 2 minutes, if the score will be tied at half time, basically anything.

What’s great about prop betting at your Super Bowl party is that it gets everyone engaged, interested and interactive with the game.

Sure you can just pick what team will win the game, but prop bets is where it’s at.

Let’s take a look at some of the best prop bets out there for Super Bowl XLVIII.

1. How many times will Peyton Manning say Omaha!: Bovada currently has the over/under on this at 27.5. That number seems low to me. Peyton said Omaha 44 times against the Ravens two weeks ago and then said it 31 times against the Patriots in the AFC title game. Is he trending down? Yes. But he raised a bunch of money for charity by saying it so many times against the Patriots that I have to think some more companies will offer more donations for him to say it during the Super Bowl and Peyton will go on an Omaha! yelling spree. Take the over.

2. What will be the lowest temperature during the game? Good question. It’s going to be cold, we know that much. Bovada has over 28 degrees Fahrenheit for even money and under 28 degrees at -140. At this writing, Weather.com has the low for Sunday in East Rutherford, N.J. at 25 degrees with a chance of snow flurries. Sounds like a fun game to be at, right? Those expensive seats in the upper deck will be delightful. Money well spent! Take the under 28 degrees.

3. How long with the national anthem take? Opera singer Renee Fleming (we all are familiar with her work, right?) will sing the anthem this year. Bovada has the over (even)/under (-140) at 2 minutes 25 seconds. Opera singers usually take a long time singing anything because it seems they love the way they sound and want everyone to experience their sound for as long as possible. Take the over.

4. Coin toss … heads or tails? The Las Vegas Hotel has both tails and heads locked in at -103. We all know that tails never fails … until it comes up heads and you feel silly for believing in such a childish statement. Go heads. Why? Because heads never fails.

6. Which team will commit the first penalty? The Las Vegas Hotel has both teams set at -110. I’ve been able to look into the future and have already seen the first drive of the game. The Broncos won the toss (after calling heads) and chose to take the ball. They wanted to put points on the board right away and send a message. Peyton dropped back to pass on the third play of the game and a defender (I couldn’t spot which one) barely touched Peyton after he threw the ball. A flag flew high into the 25-degree air and a penalty for roughing the passer was called. Take the Seahawks. By the way, any declined penalty will not count. But since Peyton threw an incompletion on the play the Broncos accepted the penalty and went on their merry way. Did they score on the drive? I’m not allowed to say.

7. Will the first TD of the game be a passing TD or a running TD? The Las Vegas Hotel has a passing TD at -170 and a rushing TD at +150. Peyton likes the throw the ball a lot. Not sure if you’ve noticed that throughout his career. I’m feeling a pass interference early on and a 1-yard TD run by Knowshon Moreno.

8. Will any member of the Red Hot Chili Peppers be shirtless during their halftime performance? Bovada has this at even money for yes, -140 for no. If you’ve followed the Chili Peppers at all over the years you know they love to take their shirts off. It’s like they were born shirtless or something. Remember that time when they took the stage wearing just a sock on their, well, private area? While they won’t be on the stage long I think they find a way to take their shirts off. We’ll have another wardrobe malfunction and for weeks we’ll hear about how stuff like this isn’t good for children to see. We must protect the children!

9. Which song will Bruno Mars perform first? I don’t know any Bruno Mars songs at all. So it’s up to you to find the odds on this one and make your bets. Hopefully he just plays Red Hot Chili Peppers tunes.

10. Will the Virginia men’s hoops team have more first-half points (-4.5; -110) against Pitt on Sunday than Eric Decker will have yards on his longest reception (+4.5; -110)? If you’re betting on this it means you probably have issues. But that doesn’t make you a bad person. It actually makes you complex and likeable. We say go with … Virginia? Sure, why not? Go Virginia!

The LVH Superbook in Las Vegas is annually the first shop to set the market — and to great fanfare. Sports book director Jay Kornegay and his staff release more props on the game every year. Their betting options go well over 300 deep in 2014.

A great site for online betting for prop bets is Bovada.lv

 XXII Olympic Winter Games

The 2014 Winter Olympics, officially the XXII Olympic Winter Games, or the 22nd Winter Olympics, will take place from February 6th to the 23rd in Sochi, Russia, with some events held in the resort town of Krasnaya Polyana. 98 events in 15 winter sport disciplines will be held. The Sochi Olympics will be the first Olympics in the Russian Federation since the breakup of the USSR. The USSR was the host nation for the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow.

The events of the 2014 Winter Olympics will be held around two clusters of new venues; an Olympic Park was constructed in the Imeretinsky Valley on the coast of the Black Sea, with Fisht Olympic Stadium and the Games’ indoor venues located within walking distance, and snow events will be held at Krasnaya Polyana. In preparation for the games, organizers focused on modernizing the telecommunications, electric power, and transportation infrastructures of the region. While originally budgeted at 12 billion, various factors caused the budget to expand to over $51 billion, surpassing the estimated $44 billion cost of the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing as the most expensive Olympics in history.

Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee launched a new version of the official site www.sochi2014.com. This version is highly interactive, offering easy access to information about the athletes participating in the Games, sport disciplines, competition schedule and the city of Sochi. The site will feature detailed results of all events in real time. In 2014, sochi2014.com will become one of the most popular sports sites on the planet – more than 100 million visitors are expected to visit the site throughout the Olympic Games.

The new version of the site consists of five main sections – competition timetables and results, sport, medals, athletes, and countries – enabling visitors to find all necessary information about the Games along with photos and video galleries of key Games moments.

The website is a fundamental resource for Winter Olympics Games fans. The home page features the schedule of events, top news, best photographs, and a countdown clock to the start of the Games in Sochi.

In the “Medals” section, visitors can access information about the awards that will be presented at the Games in Sochi and also previous Games medal standings.

A “Spectator Guide,” outlining information on the staging area of the Games, venues and services will be accessible from the site.

The site also includes a “Team support” service, through which visitors will be able to support their favorite athlete or country via a selected social network (VKontakte, Facebook, or Twitter).

Lastly, the “Voice of the Games” news section enables site visitors to learn the most up-to-date information about the Games, Partners and events. The “Voice of the Games” will also provide important information for spectators updated every 15-20 minutes.

Sochi 2014 Olympic Mascots

Sochi 2014 Olympic Mascots The Polar Bear, The Hare and The Leopard.

The Polar Bear. Beyond the Arctic Circle on a shelf of ice there lives a polar bear. In his home, everything is made out of ice and snow: his snow shower, his bed, his computer and even his weight-lifting equipment. The Polar Bear was brought up by Arctic explorers from a very early age. It was they who taught him skiing, speed-skating and curling. But above all The Polar Bear enjoyed riding sports sleighs. He became a real bobsleigh pro, while his fellow bears, along with the seals and fur seals, love watching his sporting achievements. These days they often set up bobsleigh competitions together and during the long Arctic nights, there’s never a dull moment!

The Hare. The Hare is the busiest creature in the winter forest. Her friends are always amazed: just how does she find the time to do so much! For the little doe hare not only studies at the Forest Academy (where she gets excellent grades) and helps her Mum in the family restaurant, “The Forest Dam”, but also takes part in all manner of sporting events. The little doe hare trusts her friends so much that she doesn’t have any secrets. She simply loves sport with all her heart. And she also loves to sing and dance.

The Leopard. The Leopard is a rescuer and mountain-climber who lives in the uppermost branches of a huge tree, on the highest peak of the snowy mountains in the Caucasus. He is always prepared to help those in need, and on a number of occasions has rescued nearby villages from mighty avalanches. The Leopard is an experienced snowboarder and has taught all his friends and neighbors to snowboard too. He is a cheerful character who enjoys the company of others and loves to go dancing.

MLB Spring Training 2014

The game of baseball is the biggest statistically driven sport. It is perfect for us fantasy gamers. Fantasy Baseball is by far my favorite game, not only because of the shear number of games that you can earn/lose points on, but for the different strategy that you need to employ in order to win. Fantasy football can be won by anybody, but it takes real skill to put together a winning season when you have to manage more players for more games and do it better than everyone.
Beginning with the start of MLB training camps (see below), I will attempt to help you do this by providing the information that you need and give you my advice to help you win your league and I have had my fair share of championships. Check back in a couple of weeks for my “High Heat” posts.

Some of my favorite 4 word phrases are “pitchers and catchers report! ” Spring training 2014 is right around the corner and here are some important February dates for you to know.

National Hockey League

As we head into February and a mid-month break for the Olympics, we have a pretty clear understanding who the teams are to beat in the NHL.  The Ducks are 10-2-0 in January and swept a pair from the rival Kings to cap their week, including stealing honors in the outdoor game at Dodger Stadium. Ho-hum, the good ship Anaheim just keeps on rolling as the FANFOOD top team in the game. The Blues take three out of four on their Eastern swing to continue their dominant season and are a close second in the FANFOOD top 10. Prorated over 82 games, James Neal’s 39 points in 31 games translates into 103 points. One of the many tough, tough choices Team Canada had was leaving him off the squad. The Pens keep winning as many could make the case that they are the #2 team in the league, but as the calendar flips they are in the #3 slot.

Here is the FANFOOD TOP 10:

  1. Anaheim
  2. St. Louis
  3. Pittsburgh
  4. San Jose
  5. Boston
  6. Chicago
  7. Colorado
  8. Tampa Bay
  9. Los Angeles
  10. Vancouver

Sochi Olympic Hockey Preview

When the first puck drops in Sochi, three star-studded men’s hockey teams will attract by far the most attention and be considered the favorites to win medals.

Defending gold-medal winner Canada, Vancouver; silver-medalist United States and homestanding Russia will be all over the airwaves and could very well wind up side-by-side at the medal ceremony, but there are other contenders who will challenge for hardware.

Here’s a look at the top teams:

Identity: Team Canada boasts 11 gold medalists, four Rocket Richard trophy winners, two Hart Trophy winners, two Norris Trophy winners, multiple Stanley Cup champions and a Conn Smythe winner. Given the number of players in the primes of their career, it might be the best roster Canada has ever sent to an Olympics.

Concern: Goaltending is the team’s one question mark, although Roberto Luongo was in net for the country’s 2010 Olympic gold medal and Carey Price has been sharp this season.

Forecast: Even on Russian soil, Canada is the team to beat. It’s the favorite to win the gold medal.

Identity: With Erik Karlsson, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Niklas Kronwall, Alexander Edler, Niklas Hjalmarsson, etc., Sweden might have the most skilled defense in the tournament. Plus, they have the potential to play Henrik Sedin, Niklas Backstrom and Henrik Zetterberg as their top three centers. This is a highly skilled team.

Concerns: Usually dominant Henrik Lundqvist has not been as intimidating in net as in the past.

Forecast: The Swedes are the reigning world champion and they are a contender to win the gold in Sochi.

Identity: The Americans boast a true 30-minute defenseman in Ryan Suter and 13 players who helped the USA win the silver medal in 2010. Four years later, they are older, wiser and hungrier.

Concerns: Their defense is younger than it was in 2010 and they lack a dynamic puck-rushing defenseman. They haven’t medaled outside North American since 1972.

Forecast: On paper, they don’t measure up to Canada. But that was also true in 2010, when they won the silver medal. They could medal again.

Identity: Ilya Kovalchuk, Pavel Datsyuk, Alex Ovechkin, Evgeni Malkin and Alexander Radulov will give the Russians one of the most dynamic, thrill-a-minute offenses in the tournament. These guys are show-stoppers.

Concerns: They’ll feel relentless pressure to win at home and their defensive corps isn’t as impressive as their offensive talent.

Forecast: Although oddsmakers favor the Russians for gold in Sochi, it seems fairer to say they are a prime medal contender.

Identity: With three medals in the four Olympic Games, the Finns always find a way to stay competitive. With Teemu Selanne and Mikael Granlund, the Finns have a mix of wisdom and youth.

Concerns: Some of Finland’s best players, particularly Teemu Selanne, Sami Salo and Kimmo Timonen, are not the young stars they once were.

Forecast: Mikko Koivu’s ankle surgery doesn’t help their medal chances. He isn’t scheduled to return to competition until just before the Olympics.

Identity: Boston Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara is Slovakia’s tower of strength on the blue line and Marian Hossa provides game-breaking ability up front. Jaroslav Halak is in net.

Concerns: Key players Lubomir Visnovsky (concussion) and Marian Gaborik (collarbone) are injured and considered out indefinitely.

Forecast: Don’t underestimate the Slovaks, who finished fourth in Vancouver.

Czech Republic

Identity: At 41, Jaromir Jagr is the face of the Czech team and program. He brings overflowing passion to the rink every day.

Concerns: Ondrej Pavelec (Winnipeg Jets) is the only NHL goalie on the roster.

Forecast: Not expected to be a primary medal contender, yet the team is strong enough to post a tournament-changing upset.

Identity: With NHLers Roman Josi, Mark Streit and Raphael Diaz on defense and Anaheim’s Jonas Hiller in net, the Swiss have the ability to compete with every other country. This is an opportunistic group.

Concerns: With Damien Brunner and Nino Niederreiter as their only NHL forwards, Switzerland’s ability to generate offense isn’t awe-inspiring.

Forecast: Swiss hockey has improved dramatically over the last 15 years, proved by last spring’s silver medal at the world championships. But it is too much to ask for the Swiss to contend for a medal in this talent-laden field. Or is it? If you like dark horses, saddle up.

National Basketball Association

As we head into February, Oklahoma City has moved to the top of our NBA rankings on the strength of Kevin Durant’s crazy numbers without Russell Westbrook. If Kevin Durant wrests the MVP trophy away from LeBron James, it won’t be because of LeBron fatigue. It’s because Durant’s on course to become just the seventh player ever to average 31-plus points, 7-plus rebounds, and 5-plus assists for an entire season. All of the talk about the Pacers deserving three All-Stars has taken a bit of a hit on their swing through the Western Conference. Portland rounds out the top 3 on our list. maybe it’s the fact that they needed only 44 games to match last season’s win total of 33 and has Terry Stotts dueling OKC’s Scotty Brooks for the right to coach the West All-Stars? Just temper expectations because the Blazers are just a mortal 9-7 since the 24-5 start.

The 2014 NBA All Star Game will be played on February 16, 2014 at New Orleans Arena in New Orleans, Louisiana, home of the New Orleans Pelicans. There are several guys who have climbed the ranks to stardom as we flip the calendar to February.

Let’s start with Trevor Cooney. Here is a guy who averaged fewer than four points per game last season, but he didn’t have a great chance to earn minutes with Michael Carter-Williams and Brandon Triche ahead of him in the Orange backcourt. When Cooney got a chance to play, it would be for a few minutes off the bench. Now that he is getting more than 30 minutes a game, his production has gone through the roof — he’s averaging 13.6 points per game and has hit double figures in the vast majority of the Orange’s wins. He’s one reason Syracuse has been so impressive. Down in Florida, Casey Prather has made a major impact for the Gators along the baseline. Last season, he averaged 6.2 PPG as a role player. He got more minutes right from the start of this season and the results have been tremendous. Even though he missed a couple of games due to injury, he has blossomed into a vital cog for Billy Donovan’s squad. Nick Johnson was a good player for Arizona last season. He has raised his level of play and is a legitimate All-Solid Gold candidate. Johnson is scoring 16.3 points per game — that’s nearly five points per game more than last season — and is the leading scorer for the unbeaten No. 1 team in the country. His leadership has also stood out as an upperclassman on a team with freshmen and sophomores playing key roles. Pittsburgh’s Lamar Patterson can do it all — score, rebound, pass. He was a good player last season, averaging 10 PPG. Now he is a star, scoring almost 18 per contest while leading the Panthers to early success in the ACC. He has improved his shooting and his assists have risen. Markel Brown of Oklahoma State often gets overshadowed by teammate Marcus Smart. But Brown, a senior guard, is having a very good season, as his scoring, rebounding, field goal percentage and assists per game have all gone up. He’s averaging 16.6 points per game and poured in 27 against Texas. Keep an eye on his importance for Travis Ford’s team.

The season has reached that stage of the year where one question is inevitable: How is the selection committee going to find 68 teams to play in this Tournament? Teams we thought were in good shape weeks ago are working their way out.

NCAA Tournament Projections and Bubble Watch: Jan. 29

ACC (6)
Feeling good: Duke, Syracuse, Pittsburgh, Virginia
Bubble in: Florida State, North Carolina
Bubble out: Wake Forest
Notes: Seeding for Duke and Virginia will be great if both can continue hot streaks. … Pittsburgh is probably safe, but the Panthers’ lack of a big win will hurt seeding. … A season sweep to Virginia isn’t a great look for Florida State, but the Seminoles have few blemishes on the resume. … North Carolina’s rout of Clemson allows Roy Williams to exhale a little.

American (5)
Feeling good: Cincinnati, Connecticut, Louisville, Memphis
Bubble in: SMU
Bubble out: None
Notes: Since defeating SMU and Memphis in back-to-back games in early January, Cincinnati has played the dregs of the AAC. A huge game at Louisville looms Thursday. … The Mustangs’ loss to USF on Tuesday is troublesome. … UConn’s December losses to Stanford and Houston cut down on the Huskies’ margin for error.

Atlantic 10 (4)
Feeling good: George Washington, Saint Louis, VCU
Bubble in: UMass
Bubble out: Richmond
Notes: Saint Louis’ last loss came Dec. 1 to Wichita State, but the Billikens have yet to hit the meat of their league schedule. … VCU’s win in Charlottesville over RPI No. 21 Virginia is one of the better ones for the league. The Rams also defeated Belmont, Dayton and La Salle on the road. … The non-conference resume for UMass is looking more and more suspect. The Minutemen’s only real chance for a big road statement is at George Washington. … Richmond is on the fringe after a home win over UMass on Jan. 22.

Big 12 (6)
Feeling good: Iowa State, Kansas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas
Bubble in: Kansas State
Bubble out: Baylor
Notes: Baylor, 1-6 in the Big 12 after losing at home to West Virginia, is going to play itself out of the Tournament if the Bears don’t turn things quickly. … The Sooners are the league’s biggest riser in the last month. … Kansas should be a No. 1 seed if the Jayhawks can win the tough Big 12. … Texas has defeated three consecutive AP ranked teams. … The Cowboys’ last good win was Jan. 8 against Texas.

Big East (4)
Feeling good: Creighton, Villanova
Bubble in: Providence, Xavier
Bubble out: Georgetown
Notes: Providence has won five in a row, including wins over Georgetown, Creighton and Xavier. … Georgetown has lost five in a row.

Big Ten (7)
Feeling good: Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Ohio State, Wisconsin
Bubble in: Indiana
Bubble out: Illinois
Notes: Minnesota’s loss to Nebraska wasn’t a great look, but the Gophers have four RPI top-100 wins. … Anyone remember Michigan’s loss to Charlotte? Didn’t think so. … Iowa so far has been able to avoid a loss to a below-average team, but the Hawkeyes have few elite wins. … Indiana and Illinois are close. They split head-to-head meetings, and both lost to Northwestern. The Hoosiers lost at home, but at least they have a Wisconsin win.

Missouri Valley (1)
Feeling good: Wichita State
Bubble in: None
Bubble out: Indiana State
Notes: Indiana State was the Valley’s best hope for a second at-large candidate before losing by 20 to Wichita State on the road. Perhaps the only way the MVC is a multi-bid league is if the Shockers lose in the conference tournament.

Mountain West (3)
Feeling good: San Diego State, New Mexico
Bubble in: Boise State
Bubble out: None
Notes: San Diego State will have a record befitting of a high seed but not the RPI and schedule strength. … New Mexico is by no means a lock with road trips against Utah State, Boise State, UNLV, Nevada and San Diego State looming. … Boise State needs to pick up a good conference win, but at least the schedule strength is strong.

Pac-12 (5)
Feeling good: Arizona, UCLA
Bubble in: Cal, Oregon, Stanford
Bubble out: Arizona State, Colorado
Notes: Arizona plays seven of the last 11 regular season games on the road. … Cal’s road win over Oregon is less and less impressive but not nearly as damaging as last week’s loss at USC. … The Sun Devils’ marquee win is at home over a wounded Colorado team. … The Ducks stopped the bleeding of a five-game losing streak by defeating lowly Washington State on Sunday. … Stanford’s pair of road wins (UConn and Oregon) are keeping the Cardinal in the mix.

SEC (5)
Feeling good: Florida, Kentucky
Bubble in: Missouri, LSU, Tennessee
Bubble out: Arkansas, Ole Miss
Notes: Florida may be in the conversation for a No. 1 seed. … Tennessee and Ole Miss are on the fringe. Their matchup Wednesday is huge for both. Meanwhile, LSU has lost to both. … Missouri’s road win over Arkansas on Tuesday was huge. … With loss to LSU on Tuesday, Kentucky is sliding. … Stop us if you’ve heard this before: Arkansas needs to win a road game.

West Coast (1)
Feeling good:
Bubble in: None
Bubble out: BYU, Saint Mary’s
Notes: Both BYU and Saint Mary’s lost on the road to Gonzaga, so marquee wins for both are dwindling. … BYU’s neutral site win over Texas is looking better and better, but it probably won’t be enough to overcome a 6-4 record against teams ranked between 101-200 in the RPI.

WHAT’S NEW: NASCAR on Thursday announced a new elimination-style format for the Sprint Cup championship.

WHO MAKES THE CHASE: Instead of 12, 16 drivers will make the Chase for the championship, which still includes the final 10 races of the year. A win in one of the 26 regular-season races virtually guarantees a driver a spot in the Chase field. Other Chase qualifiers will be determined based on point standings.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT: Once the Chase begins, there will be three elimination rounds — the “contender,” ”challenger” and “eliminator” rounds — each consisting of three races. Four drivers will be eliminated from title contention after each round. A win by a championship-eligible driver in any Chase race automatically clinches a spot in the next round. Ultimately, four drivers will compete in the season finale at Homestead in a winner-take-all championship race. The highest finisher of the four wins the title.

WHY THE CHANGE: NASCAR CEO Brian France said purpose was threefold: To place an added emphasis on winning races, to make the format easier for fans to understand and to allow more drivers into the Chase.

WILL IT WORK: Time will tell. This is NASCAR’s fourth significant change to the format in the last 10 years, but clearly this is the boldest move. It puts NASCAR in the company of other sports with an elimination-style format, including the NFL, MLB, NHL and NCAA basketball.

PGA Tour

The PGA Tour is the organizer of the main professional golf tours played primarily by men in the United States and North America. It organizes most of the events on the flagship annual series of tournaments also known as the PGA Tour, as well as the Champions Tour (for golfers age 50 and older) and the Web.com Tour (for professional players who have not yet qualified to play in the PGA Tour), as well as the PGA Tour Canada and PGA Tour Latinoamérica.

Originally established by the Professional Golfers’ Association of America, it was spun off in December 1968 into a separate organization for tour players, as opposed to club professionals, the focal members of today’s PGA of America. Originally the “Tournament Players Division,” it adopted the name “PGA Tour” in 1975 and runs most of the week-to-week professional golf events on the tournament known as the PGA Tour, including The Players Championship, hosted at the TPC at Sawgrass, the FedEx Cup, and the biennial Presidents Cup. The remaining events on the PGA Tour are run by different organizations, as are the U.S.-based LPGA Tour for women and the other men’s and women’s professional tours around the world.
