FANFOOD Daily Ritual

It’s a long season and a never ending cycle. First you read about the day before in the MLB, who kicked ass and who got injured and the transactions MLB teams made. Then, you take a look at the scheduled starting pitchers to see if it is your guy’s day, who is in the lineup facing him along with who your hitters will be facing. At the same time you check the weather to see if the wind is blowing out, or if it is going to rain, before setting your lineups. Now it is time to watch the games or listen to them in your car. When your first basemen hits a homerun, you check the boxscore and your team stats. You do all this while keeping an eye on the twitter feeds of the MLB team beat writers and news sites to keep updated of any injuries or breaking news. Then you make any needed moves, take a look at the players on your watch list, make any trade offers, check out the starting pitchers for tomorrow , go to bed. . .and do it all over the next day. . . Just don’t forget, you gotta eat.

Daily Recaps

It’s the first thing you need to do when you get on the internet.  Here are the FANFOOD favorites:

Rotoworld Daily Dose - great every morning with a cup of coffee. A must read.

Player News & Advice

This is where the rubber meets the road.  You have read about yesterday and all the huge happenings, now it’s time to read about other players not mentioned. Our go-to is Rotoworld, but you can’t go wrong with heading straight to the source, MLB.com.  Fantasy Pros has this great tool, “my Playbook”, where you load your fantasy team(s) and it displays only articles about your players.

FantasyPros – My Playbook

You have your second cup of coffee, and now it’s all about your time and how much you are willing to invest this morning. You’ve read about of the news from yesterday and players in the news. You probably have already checked your league’s standings, and plugged in your starting lineup. This is where most people would do the “3 S’s” and head of to work. But not you. You still have the thirst for knowledge, so you browse the rundown of fantasy blogs. You want to see what’s in the spotlight.

Probable Starting Pitchers

You should know by now if one or more of your starting pitchers is taking the mound, but what about your hitters and the pitchers they are facing? You need more information so you can consider lefty/righty matchups and ballpark factors.

MLB.com – a great source to see who your players will be going up against, if they are left or right handed, and where and what time.

MLB Team Statistics

Just because your pitcher is taking the mound doesn’t mean you should start him right?  Well if it is an ace like Verlander, or Strasburg, you have your answer.  Most likely it is another one, so you need more information about the team they are facing, so you head back to the USA Today.

MLB Weather

In deciding your starting lineup today, you have factored in whether your hitters are facing a lefty or a righty, the ballpark they are playing in, and what time of day the game is going to be played. But have you checked the weather? There are some great tools out there to help you with this, and as always it comes down to time. Rotoinfo.com is a quick read and even tells you how the wind is blowing, Weather Underground gives you more information like an hourly forecast, and MyTeamsWeather will give you weather alerts for your favorite players and teams. Who knew?

MLB Lineups

I’ll say it again, knowledge is power, and you have it. You know everything about the day in baseball, but do you know who is actually in the lineup?  MLB.com has a great twitter feed to tell you. The people over at baseball press always seem to post the lineups first, and have links to baseball-reference player stats, but the page is full of ads, and a bit hokey. I recommend the people over at Rotoinfo, with their great lineup grid to help you make good decisions. The lineup page over at the muthaship is good to use with your cellphone, but it is a sad day when they get beat by the likes of Baseball Press.

Two-Start Pitchers

If you are in a H2H league with rosters that are locked in every week, it benefits you to know what pitchers are taking the mound twice during your matchup.  Having this information will help you with your upcoming strategy and may even win you some categories. The guys over at RotoExperts will make you watch them to get your information and are great to make fun of. Just don’t watch them when you are among friends or you will be laughed out of the room. CBS sports gives you the stats, who these two start pitchers will be facing along with helpful links.

So, you are driving to the beach, or you are walking the dog, maybe you are working in the yard, or better yet, you are grilling up some steaks.  What ever it is you are doing, you are away from your computer.  What were you thinking?  Hurry up and find a WiFi signal. It’s perfect to play in the background enabling you to do two things at once. Subscribe to Sirius/XM to listen to the games. Here is a listing what channels the games are on.

Team Transactions

While you are watching the game, why not take a peek at the transactions of the day. All of following three sites will get the job done. It’s all about how much time you have to spend to read about transactions. MLB.com is straight from the horse’s mouth with no fuss, but keep in mind it reads from the bottom up, weird. Rotoworld goes into more detail, and the trade rumors site writes an individual blog entry for each tranny. Each one is a great tool to use in its own way.

Starting Pitchers for Tomorrow

If you are interested in streaming starting pitchers, you have to do your research. Most leagues will make you pick up a players the day before you plug them into your lineup, so in order to make the right call, it helps to see what other people think. The writers over at HecmanRoto put together a great article everyday about the tomorrows starting pitchers. Check it out.

Fake Teams Streamer Report

Note: There is nothing wrong with streaming if your leagues rules allow it. It usually comes to the fore front at the end of the season, because managers are able to dump starters that are done for the season. The conventional wisdom holds that streaming is good on your wins and strikeouts, but no good for you ERA and WHIP. This certainly seems to make sense: as you add starts throughout the week you add strikeouts with them. This increases your chances of “lucking” into wins or jumping up in a stat category. Of course, since you’re picking up the players that aren’t considered worthy of a permanent roster spot, you’re going to get some ugly starts that drag your rate numbers down.
