April is a great time of year. Spring has sprung; it’s time to start thinking about your next BBQ not to mention a great month in sports. March madness comes to a close with the final four and national championship in the beginning of April, and if you picked well, it’s time to root for your bracket picks and win your pool. The Masters  Tournament is played this time every year, and the course in Augusta just screams spring. The NBA and NHL wrap up their regular seasons and begin their respective playoffs, the NFL holds its annual draft, and every third Monday in April they run a long distance in Beantown.

But what I really love about April is the start of a new season in baseball. This beginning of a new season is like no other. Maybe it’s because of the long season, or maybe it has to do with the fact that we start accumulating fantasy stats, whatever it is, it’s a great feeling when everyone is tied for first place on Opening Day. And all this wasn’t enough, April is also has national Pretzel and Jelly Bean days. This article will give you all the details of sports in April with schedules and links for you to refer to throughout the month.

FINAL FOUR

April 6th

The Final Four is the semi-finals of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship. Each Final Four team is the regional champion from the East, South, Midwest or West regions of the tournament. The teams travel from the four separate sites of their regional rounds to a common venue for the Final Four. This year that site is the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. The four teams are matched against each other on the last Saturday of the tournament. The two winners emerge to play in the national championship game the next Monday evening.

NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship

April 8th

As a tournament ritual, the winning team cuts down the nets at the end of the national championship game. Starting with the seniors, and moving down by classes, players each cut a single strand off of each net; the head coach cuts the last strand connecting the net to the hoop, claiming the net itself. The game starts at 9:00 pm EDT.

Opening Day

April 1st

For over a century, baseball has been hailed above all other sports as America’s National Pastime. And no other game during the regular one-hundred sixty-two game season has been as eagerly anticipated as Opening Day. Ask any fan what the “official” start of Spring is. Chances are their answer will be Opening Day. Much more than just an event, it is an experience. For baseball fans, Opening Day serves as a symbol of rebirth. Many feel that the occasion represents a newness or a chance to forget last season.

FANFOOD  Top Spot

The Penguins are my top team in the league at the start of April, and are on their way to first overall in the Eastern Conference. They recently made two fairly big trades for Brenden Morrow and Douglas Murray. Morrow is a tremendous leader and Murray should do well in the more physical Eastern Conference. Sidney Crosby approved of Morrow’s addition. “Great acquisition, great leader,” Crosby told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. He’s going to be tough for other teams to handle.

He said that before he broke his jaw.

He had surgery Saturday, March 30th to repair a broken jaw and teeth suffered when he was struck in the face by teammate Brooks Orpik’s slap shot. Based on what usually happens with broken jaws, Crosby is in danger of missing the rest of regular season. The Penguins stated on their website on Easter that they will provide a time frame later in the week. The Penguins believe that Evgeni Malkin will step it up as they try to compensate for the long-term loss of Sidney Crosby. Malkin has played 87 games without Crosby in the lineup. How’s he done? How about 54 goals and 122 points? The Pens will be alright.

The 2013 playoffs and championship games see major teams battling for top spots in the ultimate quest for the Holy Grail of hockey, The Stanley Cup. Due to a lockout this season, the 2013 NHL hockey schedule finally kicked off on January 19, 2012 and runs through April 27, 2013. The NHL playoffs start Tuesday April 30 three days after the end of the regular season. Sixteen of the 30 league teams make the playoffs, eight from each conference. This produces 8 first round matchups. There are no first round byes. All 4 rounds are best 4 out of 7, with the top seed having the first two games at home, then the next two on the road, and then if necessary, alternate home, away and home. Teams are reseeded after the first round.

The Boston Marathon

Inspired by the marathon at the first Olympic Games in 1896, the city of Boston held its first marathon the following year on April 18 to commemorate the famous 1775 ride of colonial patriot, Paul Revere.

This year, more than 20,000 runners from around the world will converge on Boston during marathon week, leading up to the 26-mile run at the historic 117th Boston Marathon beginning at 10 AM on Monday, April 15, 2013.

The Boston Marathon is run on Patriots’ Day every year, so many Bostonians know the holiday as “Marathon Monday”.

Patriots Day

Patriots’ Day is a civic holiday commemorating the anniversary of the Battles of Lexington and Concord, the first battles of the American Revolutionary War. It is observed on the third Monday in April in Massachusetts and Maine.

The Boston Red Sox have traditionally been scheduled to play at home in Fenway Park on Patriots’ Day every year since 1959. Since 1968 the games have started early, in the morning, around 11:00 am. The early start to these games usually resulted in the game ending just as the marathon is heading through Kenmore Square. However, since 2007 the marathon has started between 9:30 am and 10:00 am, resulting in the racers going through Kenmore towards the middle of the Red Sox game.

The Boston Marathon course

One of the few remaining runs that maintains qualifying times & requirements, the Boston Marathon features an historic course starting on Main Street in rural Hopkinton – and winds its way through Ashland, Framingham, Natick, Wellesley – with an agonizing stretch up Newton’s Heartbreak Hill before finishing in Boston near the John Hancock Tower at Copley Square.

NFL Draft

Held in New York City, the 78th annual NFL Draft kicks off this year with the official announcement of first round draft picks on Thursday, April 25, 2013 at 8PM ET, with the second and third rounds on Friday, April 26 followed by Rounds 4-7 on Saturday, April 27. The draft, which is officially called the “NFL Player Selection Meeting,” will be held at Radio City Music Hall.

This year, NFL draft pundits are almost unanimous in their top first round picks with Utah’s “one man wrecking crew” defensive tackle and Tonga native, Star Lotulelei in the Top 5. Most likely to join him are LSU’s defensive end Barkevious Mingo; Georgia outside linebacker Jarvis Jones; Alabama’s offensive guard Chance Warmack; and West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith.

Other top contenders with a definite shot at 2013 NFL draft lineup stardom, include USC quarterback Matt Barkley, Florida State defensive end Bjoern Werner, and North Carolina defensive tackle Sylvester Williams.
