For over a century, baseball has been hailed above all other sports as America’s National Pastime. And no other game during the regular one-hundred sixty-two game season has been as eagerly anticipated as Opening Day. Ask any fan what the “official” start of Spring is. Chances are their answer will be Opening Day. Much more than just an event, it is an experience. For baseball fans, Opening Day serves as a symbol of rebirth. Many feel that the occasion represents a newness or a chance to forget last season.

The 2017 Major League Baseball season will begin with seven season-opening games in two days between Sunday, April 2 and Monday, April 3.

It all comes down to this, less than two weeks remain in the NHL schedule as we head into April. The top three teams in each division automatically get into the playoffs, accounting for 12 of the league’s 16 playoff berths. The final four spots, two per conference, go to the teams with the highest point totals who finish outside of their division’s top three. These are the wild cards. This is the third year of this new format and it allows for the possibility that any given division could send as few as three teams to the playoffs, and as many as five. Six teams have clinched a playoff spot as the NHL season has two weeks left as teams jockey for playoff spots and the top spot in this week’s NHL power rankings.Click here for the complete schedule for the remaining games in April,

The 2016-17 NBA regular season is nearing its end. Roughly three weeks remain until the postseason begins, which has all 30 teams under some measure of pressure.
Many teams are valuing each and every game as a chance to improve their positioning in the pursuit of the postseason. A similar number of organizations are hoping to hold onto protected draft picks or improve their odds come the lottery. As the basketball season winds down, the excitement heats up as another NBA Playoff season kicks off in the battle to win the national championship. Sixteen of the 30 league teams make the playoffs, eight from each conference. This produces 8 first round matchups. There are no first round byes. In the world of golf, the Masters is a traditional rite of spring featuring top golfers battling it out for the green jacket in the first major golf championship of the 2017 season, and with prize money worth over a million dollars. The Masters has the smallest field of the four major championships. Officially, the Masters remains an invitation event, but there is a set of qualifying criteria that determines who is included in the field. There are multiple ways that golfers can qualify to receive an invitation to play in The Masters. In fact, there are 19 ways. Click here to learn more about the all the qualifying criteria, the complete Masters TV schedule on ESPN and CBS, links to watch the Masters LIVE online, and a couple of flyovers of the famous Augusta National Golf Course, along with a behind the scenes look inside the clubhouse. But that tournament isn’t the only one being played in April, click here for the full schedule with links to the big events

NASCAR fans, don’t worry, we got you covered with info on each April Race, including track details and previews.

The ATP and the WTA have some interesting events in April. Click here for the complete schedule for the Professional Tennis Tournaments for both the Men and the Woman in April.

Inspired by the marathon at the first Olympic Games in 1896, the city of Boston held its first marathon the following year on April 18 to commemorate the famous 1775 ride of colonial patriot, Paul Revere. This year, more than 20,000 runners from around the world will converge on Boston during marathon week, leading up to the 26-mile run at the historic 121st Boston Marathon  beginning at 10 AM on Monday, April 17, 2017.. The Boston Marathon is run on Patriots’ Day every year, so many Bostonians know the holiday as “Marathon Monday”. This year the eyes of the world will be on the event after the bombing in 2013. Click here for links to the Boston Marathon along with a video of the entire course in less than 10 minutes.

The 2017 NFL Draft will be the 82nd annual meeting of National Football League (NFL) franchises to select newly eligible football players. It is scheduled to be held April 27-29 in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art at Eakins Oval (along the Ben Franklin Parkway). This marks the first time the draft has returned to Philadelphia since 1961. The player selections will be announced from an outdoor theater built on the famous Rocky Steps. This marks the first time an entire NFL draft is held outdoors.

With MLB Spring Training in full effect, it’s time to start thinking about cooking outdoors. March 20th was the official start of spring, and it’s time to start thinking about Spring BBQ. Click Here for information on Spring Cleaning your grills, and what’s in season, and 17 new recipes for ’17.

The Final Four

The Final Four are set. Unfamiliar faces — and North Carolina — make up a very different Final Four.

Only three games remain in the 2016-17 men’s college basketball season, so we’re 120 minutes (barring overtimes) away from finding out whether North Carolina, Gonzaga, Oregon or South Carolina will win the national championship.

Three of those teams aren’t huge surprises, given their success in recent years and their expectations for this season. South Carolina, though? That was one heck of a curveball.

Now that the Gamecocks are here, though, they just might win it all.

How did these teams get here? Who are their best players? What is each team’s blueprint to a title?

What follows are the stars, stats and story lines to watch when action resumes in Glendale, Arizona, on Saturday night.

No. 1 Gonzaga vs. No. 7 South Carolina

Saturday at 6:09 p.m. ET (CBS) (Live stream)

Buckle up for what could be one of the ugliest rock fights in the final weekend of the NCAA tournament since Connecticut’s 53-41 win over Butler in the 2011 national championship game. This time around, though, it’ll be because these are two of the most efficient defenses in the country.

South Carolina thrives on forcing turnovers, and Gonzaga had more than a little bit of trouble dealing with Press Virginia two rounds ago. However, that game might have helped prepare the Bulldogs for what they’ll be facing from the Gamecocks. And if South Carolina doesn’t force at least seven more turnovers than it gives up, Sindarius Thornwell might not be enough for yet another upset.

No. 1 North Carolina vs. No. 3 Oregon

Saturday at 8:49 p.m. ET (CBS) (Live stream)

By luck of the draw, Oregon ran into four teams average at best on the glass, three of which did most of their damage this season from three-point range.

North Carolina is a completely different animal. Save for about 12-to-15 three-point attempts from Joel Berry and Justin Jackson, the Tar Heels want to do the bulk of their scoring in the paint, where the Ducks have struggled since losing Chris Boucher.

With both Tyler Dorsey and Dillon Brooks making it rain from three-point range, anything is possible. North Carolina scored at will in the paint in both of its losses to Duke this season, but the Blue Devils shot a combined 23-of-44 from three-point range in those games, willfully trading threes for twos. And Duke didn’t have a shot-blocker the likes of Jordan Bell.

Still, North Carolina’s eight-man rotation and four-man frontcourt ought to be just a little too much for the Ducks to handle.

National Hockey League

The Capitals are back on top. A four-game win streak — and big play from Alex Ovechkin and Kevin Shattenkirk — has the Caps right where they need to be. Let’s see if they choke again. The second best team according to us is Pittsburgh as Sidney Crosby had both a fantastic and polarizing week for his highlight-reel goals and sneaky cheap shots. But what’s new? Outside of a slip-up vs. the Islanders, they’re still plowing teams offensively. The most unfortunate thing is that, after this great and underappreciated run, the Blue Jackets will be thrust into a dangerously seeded playoff bracket. It’s going to be a fun Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Stanley Cup Playoffs

The ultimate quest for the Holy Grail of hockey, the Stanley Cup is under way as the NHL season kicked off in October. This will be the fourth year in which the top three teams in each division make the playoffs, along with two wild cards in each conference (for a total of eight playoff teams from each conference).

As it did last year, NBC will also continue to make the entire Stanley Cup Playoffs available live and online.

Sixteen of the 30 league teams make the playoffs, eight from each conference. Per conference, the top three finishers of both divisions and two wildcard teams make the playoffs. This produces 8 first round matchups. There are no first round byes.

The format of the NHL Playoffs for all 4 rounds is best 4 out of 7 (HHAAHAH). As of this posting, the schedule has yet to be determined.

Stanley Cup playoffs are scheduled to begin on April 12 and last until mid-June.

National Basketball Association

Can you believe there are only two-ish weeks of the season left? While you were watching college basketball this entire month, the playoff picture has cleared up a good amount. Here’s a quick rundown: the Celtics caught the Cavs out East, where the Heat are finally in playoff position, the Bucks are hot, the Hawks are not, and the rest of the Central Division might secretly be trying to miss the postseason.

The top three are fairly set out West, where the Jazz, Clippers, Thunder and Grizzlies continue to jockey for seeding, and it’s down to the Nuggets and Blazers for the last spot. There are 10 games left to play for just about everyone, and it’s managed to remain interesting.

Here are the FANFOOD Top 10 NBA Teams to close out the season:

  2. Rockets
  3. Spurs
  4. Celtics
  5. Cavaliers

Combining a history that stretches more than 65 years with a future infused with a new premier series entitlement sponsor and a next generation of stars, NASCAR unveiled a new brand identity Monday via its social and digital media platforms.
In addition, NASCAR also unveiled the mark and name for its premier series, which will become the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series beginning in 2017.

The new brand identity — which replaces the familiar bar mark that had been in place since 1976 — uses the colors and feel of past marks, while modernizing it to fit with the new era the sanctioning body enters in 2017.

NASCAR began the process of designing a new mark early in 2016. It becomes the fifth mark in NASCAR history.

“Our new NASCAR mark is modern, timeless, and embraces the heritage of our sport,” said Jill Gregory, NASCAR senior vice president and chief marketing officer. “It was important for us to recognize our history and implement a piece of each previous mark in the new design. Our goal was to evolve the sport’s visual identity to make it concise, relevant and functional, while respecting and maintaining the unique qualities of the original mark.”

The new mark incorporates pieces of each of NASCAR’s previous marks, including the red, yellow and blue coloring from the first three marks, respectively, and the ‘racing bars’ that accompany the acronym ‘NASCAR’ from the prior iteration.

THE BOSTON MARATHON

Inspired by the marathon at the first Olympic Games in 1896, the city of Boston held its first marathon the following year on April 18 to commemorate the famous 1775 ride of colonial patriot, Paul Revere.

This year, more than 20,000 runners from around the world will converge on Boston during marathon week, leading up to the 26-mile run at the historic 121st Boston Marathon beginning at 10 AM on Monday, April 17, 2017.

The Boston Marathon is run on Patriots’ Day every year, so many Bostonians know the holiday as “Marathon Monday”.

Patriots Day

Patriots’ Day is a civic holiday commemorating the anniversary of the Battles of Lexington and Concord, the first battles of the American Revolutionary War. It is observed on the third Monday in April in Massachusetts and Maine.

The Boston Red Sox have traditionally been scheduled to play at home in Fenway Park on Patriots’ Day every year since 1959. Since 1968 the games have started early, in the morning, around 11:00 am. The early start to these games usually resulted in the game ending just as the marathon is heading through Kenmore Square. However, since 2007 the marathon has started between 9:30 am and 10:00 am, resulting in the racers going through Kenmore towards the middle of the Red Sox game.

The Boston Marathon course

One of the few remaining runs that maintains qualifying times & requirements, the Boston Marathon features an historic course starting on Main Street in rural Hopkinton – and winds its way through Ashland, Framingham, Natick, Wellesley – with an agonizing stretch up Newton’s Heartbreak Hill before finishing in Boston near the John Hancock Tower at Copley Square.

NFL Draft

April 27 – 29

The 2017 NFL Draft will be the 82nd annual meeting of National Football League (NFL) franchises to select newly eligible football players. It is scheduled to be held April 27-29 in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art at Eakins Oval (along the Ben Franklin Parkway). This marks the first time the draft has returned to Philadelphia since 1961.

The player selections will be announced from an outdoor theater built on the famous Rocky Steps. This marks the first time an entire NFL draft is held outdoors.

The Cleveland Browns are at the top of the draft order following their 1-15 season, but they also have the No. 12 selection thanks to a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2016. While there’s still time for players to climb up or slide down boards, Texas A&M defensive end Myles Garrett is the consensus favorite to be Cleveland’s No. 1 pick.
